As the urban landscape evolves, many older cities find themselves grappling with the pressing issue of aging infrastructure. Decades of wear and tear, coupled with the demands of modern society, have rendered many vital structures and systems outdated and in desperate need of renewal, upgrading, and basic maintenance. However, the costs associated with these challenges often exceed the financial capabilities of residents, local governments and businesses, posing a threat to public safety and hindering sustainable growth.

Greg Batista, P.E., a seasoned professional in the engineering and construction sectors with three decades of experience under his belt, underscores the overlooked issue of aging and dilapidated structures. He points out that leading Engineering associations, like the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), have repeatedly awarded mediocre grades to the nation’s infrastructure, underscoring its aged condition. This highlights the pressing need for immediate repair work and enhancements to numerous such structures.

“I’ve worked on numerous large-scale projects and served as an expert witness in various cases, so I can confirm that neglecting these issues can lead to detrimental outcomes for building residents, cities and local businesses,” he says.

A lack of funding to perform repairs is at the heart of this problem. Batista suggests that identifying and pursuing diverse funding sources to support infrastructure projects can be a solution to bridge the gap between available resources and the cost of necessary improvements. 

“This may involve a combination of government funding, public-private partnerships, grants, bonds, and government grants to facilitate construction loans. Still, given the ongoing dysfunction within the government and an overall lack of education at the highest levels, I doubt we can go far without root changes in the system.”

In a 2021 report by the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE), 11 out of 17 types of American infrastructure were given a near-failing “D” grade. Moreover, it was estimated that 43% of American roads were in need of repair, while 1 in 9 bridges were “structurally deficient”.

“Failing bridges are deadly. In Pittsburgh alone, for example, over 20% of bridges are deemed to be in structural disrepair, and we could witness that last year, when the Fern Hollow Bridge collapsed.” Batista shares. “Delayed maintenance leads to further deterioration and escalates costs, which strains the already burdened budget. It’s a domino effect that poses safety risks to our residents and also hinders cities’ ability to attract new investments.”

In light of these concerns, Batista urges both experts and local authorities to use a proactive approach when it comes to infrastructure improvements. He emphasizes the importance of identifying critical areas for repair and has developed a number of cutting-edge solutions to solve complex engineering and construction issues.

“I believe in implementing solutions that not only involve immediate fixing but also contribute to long-term resilience. By adopting innovative technologies and materials, we can optimize investments and ensure a sustainable future for our cities.”

Despite the prevailing national infrastructure crisis, Batista remains steadfast in his commitment to driving progress.
