It’s no surprise that most people give up exercising soon after they start. Exercise is hard, and it’s easy to become dissuaded when you don’t see the results you’re looking for. For most people, having a friend alongside you can make it a lot easier to stick to your goals. Working out with a friend, however, gives you more than just an accountability buddy.

Motivation

When it comes to working out, it can be easy to fall into the trap of thinking that you aren’t making any progress. But a friend can point out just how far you have come. Working out is a constant game of pushing yourself forward and building yourself bit by bit. These little bits of progress, however, are hard to spot by yourself.

Fun

For a lot of people, exercising is just a way of staying healthy. It can be hard to find any fun in it. Hanging out with a friend, however, is always enjoyable. Even when you’re both working out in the middle of summer, having a friend can give you the strength to finish your workout.

Building Bonds

Working out alone strengthens your body. Working out with a friend strengthens your body and your friendship. As you get older, life can make it difficult to find time to spend time with your friends. Working out together is the perfect excuse to get together and socialize, as well as giving you a reason not to skip your workout.

Splitting The Costs

Exercising can quickly become expensive. Having a friend working out with you can drastically cut down on how much you spend. Whether that’s splitting the costs on new equipment or just sharing a ride down to your favorite fitness center, a workout buddy is perfect for saving money.

Safety

Working out is a lot safer when you have a friend by your side. Going for a run at night, for example, is a lot safer if you have someone you can count on if something happens. The same is true even when you’re at the gym. When you’re lifting weights, a spotter is a must. And having a spotter you can trust makes it a lot easier to push yourself safely.

Accountability

Sooner or later, you’re going to want to skip a day. Skip a day, and it becomes easier to convince yourself to skip a second and a third. When you have a workout buddy, it becomes a lot harder to come up with a weak excuse to skip.

Getting Results

Working out with a friend is a powerful source of motivation. And motivation makes it easier to get the results that you want. Part of this comes from the extra accountability. But a friend can also serve as a rival that can help you push yourself beyond what you think you’re capable of.

Everything is better with a friend, and working out is no exception. Whether it’s making you feel safe at night or giving you an excuse not to miss your workout, a friend can make the difference between reaching your goals or giving up.
