Across the United States, nonprofits face a growing challenge: how to move beyond temporary aid and create lasting change. New Era Relief, a Los Angeles-based organization founded in 1991, believes the answer lies in capacity-building, particularly for youth navigating poverty, instability, and limited access to opportunity.

Under the leadership of Executive Director Michelangelo Falcon, New Era Relief is repositioning itself as a national model for prevention through entrepreneurship.

The organization’s origins are deeply personal. Its founder, Rachel Cosmic, survived addiction, homelessness, and violence before dedicating her life to community service. Her lived experience informed decades of youth-focused programming addressing substance abuse and domestic violence.

Today, Falcon is expanding that mission to include economic empowerment, launching a Youth Entrepreneur Program that connects young people with mentors across professional fields. Participants gain exposure to industries they might otherwise never encounter, learning directly from practitioners rather than relying on traditional educational pipelines. This hands-on approach fosters critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a deeper understanding of real-world challenges, empowering youth to pursue entrepreneurial ventures with confidence, resilience, and the ability to adapt to evolving opportunities, ultimately creating positive societal impact.

A cornerstone of the program is creative enterprise. Youth are supported in producing and selling original artwork, transforming creativity into income and self-worth. The initiative creates jobs, fosters pride, and reframes how young people see their own potential.

In addition to entrepreneurship, the program incorporates essential life skills training, focusing on financial literacy, time management, and communication. These skills, often overlooked in traditional education systems, are critical in helping youth make informed decisions as they transition into adulthood. By focusing on both practical business knowledge and personal development, the program ensures that participants are equipped to navigate both professional environments and life challenges.

Alongside these efforts, New Era Relief’s annual toy drive continues to meet immediate needs, distributing more than 1,000 toys to children during the holiday season.

The toy drive not only serves as a charitable effort but also fosters a culture of giving, where youth involved in New Era Relief’s programs can participate in organizing and distributing the toys, learning the value of giving back to their own communities. This hands-on experience enhances the sense of responsibility and social consciousness that is central to the organization’s mission.

What distinguishes New Era Relief nationally is its integrated approach combining health, mentorship, entrepreneurship, and community engagement into a single ecosystem. As Falcon puts it, “We’re not just helping kids survive childhood. We’re helping them build adulthood.”

Looking to the future, New Era Relief is planning to expand its reach to other cities across the United States, aiming to replicate its model of empowerment and community engagement in diverse communities facing similar challenges. With a commitment to sustainability and growth, the organization is positioning itself as a leader in the nationwide movement towards youth empowerment through entrepreneurship and mentorship.

As the program expands, New Era Relief is also exploring partnerships with local businesses and educational institutions to further strengthen its support network and provide additional resources to participants. This collaboration will help the organization reach more youth, creating a broader impact across multiple regions.

In the coming years, New Era Relief also plans to establish regional hubs in key cities, where young people can receive year-round support and mentorship, expanding its reach even further. This will ensure that more youth have access to the tools and resources needed to succeed, not just during the holidays but throughout the year.

With expansion plans underway, New Era Relief represents a shift in how American nonprofits think about youth intervention, not as charity recipients, but as future contributors.
