Valentina Baytina, a Russian-born entrepreneur who has lived across multiple countries and recently drove a Lamborghini through Afghanistan, believes that in today’s world, good manners and social skills matter more than money. We often like to think that success is driven by access, money, connections, and opportunities, and, to some extent, that is true. But in reality, there is something far more immediate and decisive: how you behave in the moment.

From an early age, we are taught the basics of behavior in school, yet real upbringing begins much earlier, within the family and through the environments we grow up in. Over time, people develop different ways of navigating the world. Some rely on pressure, others on confidence, and many fall into patterns of aggression when faced with uncertainty. However, aggression always creates more aggression, and while it may produce short-term results, it rarely builds long-term respect.

As people gain more resources, many begin to believe that everything can be solved with money or influence, that respect can be bought or negotiated. But in reality, especially in unfamiliar environments, this illusion breaks very quickly. True influence reveals itself not in what you have, but in how you behave when you are outside your comfort zone.

This became particularly clear to Baytina during her first day in Afghanistan. The environment was intense, unpredictable, and entirely different from anything familiar. At one point, the owner of a gas station approached them and offered Connor a gift, a bottle of perfume. It was not a transaction or a symbolic gesture, but a genuine act of hospitality and respect.

Connor, being practical, does not like accepting things he does not need. Living out of a Lamborghini means space is limited, and he didn’t use perfume. Without thinking, he handed the gift to their travel assistant and said, “I don’t need this.”

In that exact moment, everything shifted.

Baytina describes it not as a logical realization, but as an instinctive reaction. It felt like a direct insult, even though no harm was intended. What was meant as generosity could easily be interpreted as rejection. The atmosphere changed instantly, becoming tense and uncertain.

She stepped in immediately, quietly telling him to take it back and express gratitude. He paused, understood the situation, and corrected himself. Nothing dramatic followed, but the lesson was clear. In certain cultures and environments, how you respond matters far more than what seems rational to you.

This is where the true meaning of etiquette reveals itself. It is not about rigid rules, formal language, or outdated traditions. It is about awareness, understanding the meaning behind gestures, recognizing emotional context, and sensing when something matters, even if it appears insignificant on the surface.

This perspective also challenges the traditional understanding of status. Many still define status through wealth, connections, or external success. Yet, if you place ten individuals with similar backgrounds, similar resources, and even similar appearance in the same environment, not all of them will leave a lasting impression.

What separates them is not what they have, but how they present themselves.

First impression plays a decisive role. Even without seeing a person, simply hearing their voice, tone, and energy is enough to form a perception. That perception shapes every subsequent interaction and often determines the opportunities that arise.

Today, the world is more competitive than ever. There are more talented, educated, and visually polished individuals than at any point in history. Social media has made visibility accessible to everyone, and standing out is no longer about being louder or more visible. It is about precision, how intentionally and thoughtfully you present yourself.

Recognizing this shift, Baytina built her work around social skills, etiquette, and the art of first impressions. She works with children, teenagers, and young women, teaching them how to communicate, carry themselves, and understand social dynamics. She lectures at universities and provides private mentorship for individuals who recognize that perception is not superficial, but strategic.

For her, these skills are not optional additions; they are foundational. They influence how people are perceived in both personal and professional environments, shaping relationships, opportunities, and long-term positioning.

Baytina also emphasizes the importance of education and travel. She considers them the most valuable investments a person can make, not only because they broaden perspective but also because they reveal personal limitations. Exposure to different cultures and environments forces individuals to confront their blind spots, challenge assumptions, and encourage growth.

Her approach is grounded in experience rather than perfection. She openly acknowledges that she has made mistakes, misread situations, lost control, and damaged first impressions. These moments, however, became essential to her development. The difference, she believes, lies in whether a person learns from these experiences or repeats them.

Today, she describes her life as intense and deeply transformative, a phase where reflection meets action. With that comes a strong desire to share not only successes but also failures, offering a more complete and honest perspective on growth.

Because, as she simply puts it, smart people learn from other people’s mistakes.

In a world where access is no longer a differentiator, behavior becomes the defining factor. Money may open doors, but it is awareness, presence, and social intelligence that determine what happens next.
