Neck pain affects approximately 30 percent of adults each year, making it one of the most common pain complaints after low back pain. For the working adults, professionals, and active residents of Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, Boca Raton, and across Palm Beach County, the combination of prolonged screen use, high-stress professional demands, and an active South Florida lifestyle can contribute to cervical strain that does not always fully resolve with muscle relaxants and physical therapy alone. At ReliefNow Laser Boynton Beach, an integrative approach combines the Regenerative Medical Laserâ„¢ protocol with the cervical treatment framework of Eastern medicine, used alongside conventional care, to address both the structural and neurological aspects of neck pain.

Cervical disc degeneration is generally a gradual, progressive process, and earlier evaluation is associated with a broader range of conservative care options. An integrative approach that considers both tissue-level changes and the meridian pathway framework of Eastern medicine is one way to address multiple aspects of a chronic cervical condition as part of a comprehensive plan.

As an acupuncture and Oriental medicine provider in the ReliefNow® network, I evaluate cervical pain through both the Western structural lens, including disc degeneration, facet joint arthritis, and radiculopathy, and the Eastern meridian pattern lens, including the Small Intestine, Bladder, and Gallbladder channel pathways that traverse the cervical region and whose obstruction is associated in classical theory with stiffness, pain, and referred symptoms of chronic cervical conditions.

Why Is Neck Pain So Persistent in South Florida’s Screen Population?

The Global Burden of Disease Study identifies neck pain as one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. Research on forward head posture, including work by Hansraj published in Surgical Technology International in 2014, has used biomechanical modeling to estimate that the effective compressive load on the cervical spine increases substantially as the head tilts forward, with modeled forces ranging from approximately 27 pounds at 15 degrees of flexion to approximately 60 pounds at 60 degrees, compared with a head weight of approximately 10 to 12 pounds in a neutral position. Forward head posture is now widely associated with smartphone and screen use, which is common across Palm Beach County’s professional population.

In Eastern medicine, this presentation is described as a Qi and Blood stagnation pattern in the neck and upper back meridian pathways, a chronic obstruction that classical theory associates with progressive changes in the cervical region over time.

How Is the Regenerative Medical Laserâ„¢ Protocol Used for Cervical Pain?

At ReliefNow Laser Boynton Beach, the Regenerative Medical Laserâ„¢ protocol uses near-infrared laser energy directed at the cervical region, including the disc, nerve root area, and surrounding musculature, as part of a non-surgical care plan. Photobiomodulation has been studied for its cellular-level effects, with published research examining its relationship to inflammatory cytokines associated with nerve root irritation and to tissue repair processes. A 2019 systematic review in Pain Research and Management examined photobiomodulation for cervical pain and reported reductions in pain and disability scores across the studies analyzed.

What Does Eastern Medicine Add for Cervical Patients?

Acupuncture for neck pain targets the cervical and periscapular meridian pathway points that classical Chinese medicine associates with cervical obstruction patterns. In this framework, it is used with the aim of addressing deep suboccipital and paraspinal tension, influencing pain signaling through the cervical dermatomes, and addressing the constitutional patterns (such as Liver Qi stagnation and Kidney deficiency in older patients) that classical theory connects to the chronic cervical picture.

A 2012 meta-analysis in Archives of Internal Medicine, analyzing data across a large patient population, found that acupuncture produced significant effects on neck pain compared with sham and usual care. For patients whose neck pain has not responded to physical therapy alone, the neuromodulatory dimension of acupuncture addresses a different aspect of the clinical picture than structural treatments.

What Is the Clinical Picture for Cervical Radiculopathy in Palm Beach County?

Cervical disc herniation at C5-C6 and C6-C7, which can produce arm pain, hand tingling, and grip weakness, is sometimes mistaken for shoulder impingement or carpal tunnel syndrome. My evaluation of neck pain patients includes neurological assessment of the upper extremity distribution, with attention to whether a cervical source is contributing to symptoms that wrist- or shoulder-focused treatment alone may not fully address.
