For Genrikh Rozhkov, the path to college hockey has been built on early discipline, international development, and a clear understanding of the player he wants to become. From his early beginnings in Minsk to his development in Canada and the United States, Rozhkov’s journey reflects resilience, growth, and a steady climb toward professional hockey.
Currently, the 6’3” offensive defenseman is competing at McKendree University and continues to focus on refining his game and preparing for the next level.
Let’s start our story from where it all began. Back in Minsk, at an extremely young age, younger than many players, Rozhkov stepped on the ice.
“I started playing hockey very early in childhood, at three years old,” Rozhkov explained. “My mom first put me into figure skating, and after that, I moved to a hockey program.”

Like many young athletes, he experimented with multiple sports early on, but hockey quickly became the one that stood out, so the decision to stick to it was not hard to make.
“Since early childhood, I have tried many different sports, and hockey was one of them. In the end, it became the sport I truly connected with,” he said.
Growing up in Minsk, Rozhkov benefited from strong coaching and structured development that helped shape his early foundation.
“When I was young, I was lucky to have good coaches in Minsk. They helped me grow in hockey the right way and taught me the right values from an early age,” he shared.

Rozhkov believed he could pursue hockey at a high level even when he was little.
“From the very beginning, I chose this sport early, and I always felt that I had a real chance to play hockey at a high level and truly enjoy the game.”
Rozhkov’s development continued in the Dinamo Minsk system, where he built the foundation that would prepare him for international hockey.
“Dinamo Minsk gave me a very strong foundation that helped me become a strong player coming out of youth hockey,” Rozhkov explained. “We had a great coach. He was tough, but that environment helped develop a lot of good players.”
The competitive environment helped him mature both physically and mentally, preparing him for the next stage of his development and carrying on what he was taught back in Minsk throughout his whole journey.
Rozhkov’s move to Canada marked a major turning point in his career, both on and off the ice.
“Canada gave me a lot. It was one of the memorable, maybe highly memorable, experiences of my life, not only in hockey but in life overall,” Rozhkov said. “I grew a lot there as a person, became more aware, and realized that my true position in hockey is defense.”
This transition proved crucial in shaping his identity as a player and as a person.
“Thanks to a great coach there, I was able to develop my potential as a defenseman,” he added.
The experience helped Rozhkov evolve into the offensive-minded defenseman he is today.
Genrikh admits that he has had obstacles and challenges both on and off the ice throughout his career. However, those were more than just unfortunate situations; it was a chance to build stronger character and mentality both as a person and a hockey player.
“There was never just one lesson,” he explained. “In hockey, you are always facing difficulties, obstacles, and challenges. You are always trying to come out stronger. So for me, an important lesson is that you are constantly learning and growing.”
That mindset has helped him navigate injuries, transitions, and new levels of competition. Rozhkov’s decision to continue his career in North America was driven by his long-term ambitions. There are a lot of reasons why he decided to move continents:
“Because I want to reach a high level possible and North America gives players great opportunities to get where they want to go,” Rozhkov said. “My goal is to play for strong teams, if possible. At the same time, it is important for me to finish my education and earn my degree.”
His time with the Maine Jr. Mariners became one of the important steps in his development.
“That season was my first full season after injury, so it was very important for me,” Rozhkov explained. “Because of my individual work, I was able to find my style and really start building my identity as an offensive defenseman.”
Rozhkov’s hard work paid off, as he posted strong offensive numbers from the blue line.
“A lot of it came from working on myself and understanding what kind of defenseman I want to be. I had a clear vision of my game and how I wanted to play. That helped my offensive side grow.”
Good statistics did not stop the defenseman from continuous growth. Rozhkov proceeded with his development in junior hockey, where he gained valuable experience and confidence.
“Playing junior hockey helped me build confidence and gain experience. It also helped me develop more of my potential, not only as a defenseman,” he said.
Interestingly, his ability to play multiple positions became an advantage.
“I was also able to play forward again at times. That gave me a big advantage later on because it improved my offensive instincts while I kept getting stronger defensively.”
All of this hard work over the years started paying off when Genrikh reached the level of college hockey. Now at McKendree University, Rozhkov sees all the differences that he was able to adjust to:
“College hockey is not completely different from junior hockey; the players are bigger, faster, and better overall,” Rozhkov explained. “I would say the main difference is the speed of the game. College hockey is definitely at a serious level.”
His focus at the college level remains clear.
“My main goal in college hockey is to prepare myself for professional hockey. I want to become stronger, more skilled, and better in every area, not only physically but mentally too.”
At 6 ‘3”, Rozhkov brings a unique combination of size and offensive ability. However, his size is not his only strong asset when it comes to playing the game:
“I am a very offensive defenseman,” he explained. “I become even more effective offensively when I play with teammates who have a high hockey IQ because I am not just an offensive defenseman, I am also a playmaker.”
Besides just IQ, Rozhkov’s long reach helps him handle the puck and get around opponents. Long stride, strong skating, and other functions that were developed during his young years help him move fast past the opponents. The defenseman admits that his skating remains a key strength.
“My main strength is my skating. Almost everything I do starts from that. On top of that, I have strong instincts, which help me understand what I should do in different moments.”
Throughout his journey, Genrikh’s family has played a major role in his career.
“My family has been a strong support system in my career,” he said. “My mom especially has supported me through difficult moments. Without my mom’s support during difficult periods, I honestly do not think I would still be playing hockey today.”
Despite playing far from home, Rozhkov stays connected with loved ones.
“With today’s technology, staying connected is not a problem at all. Family and close friends are some of the most valuable things in life.”
This support system is being carried on not only by his family. 369 Sport & Entertainment continues to work with players like Rozhkov, helping them manage development decisions, transitions between teams, and long-term career planning. With experience supporting athletes moving through North American junior and college hockey, 369 Sport & Entertainment provides structure and guidance during key stages of a player’s career.
For Rozhkov, whose path has included Belarus, Canada, junior hockey, and now college hockey, this type of support plays an important role as he prepares for the next step toward professional hockey.
Traveling through so many borders, Genrikh is not ready to stop any time soon. Rozhkov remains focused on his long-term goals.
“My main goal is to prepare for a professional career,” he explained. “Next season I also want to earn a key role as a defenseman and help bring wins to my team.”
Throughout the journey across multiple countries and leagues, having the right guidance has played an important role in Rozhkov’s development. For international players navigating different systems, leagues, and opportunities, support off the ice can be just as important as performance on it. The young player admits that his mindset toward success is built on discipline and consistency.
“For me, motivation has never been the foundation. The foundation is desire, discipline and understanding what I want from life. Real success comes from consistent hard work and pushing yourself every day.”
Rozhkov also offers advice for younger players pursuing similar paths.
“Be ready for unfairness, because sport is a tough business,” he said. “If you truly feel you are being judged unfairly, you should think about finding a place where your game will be valued properly.”
From Minsk to North America and now college hockey, Genrikh Rozhkov’s journey reflects growth, resilience, and ambition. With size, skill, and a clear vision for the future, his path toward professional hockey continues to take shape.
