If you’re planning a vacation and want to avoid the cost of flying, a driving trip to the Great Smoky Mountains may work well for you. This beautiful area of the country offers plenty of beautiful drives and natural resources to help you relax and enjoy time with your family.

Get Some Fresh Air

Consider booking a cabin and spending some time hiking. If your little ones are too small for a serious hike, you can find trails that are ideal for beginners. A simple loop trail can allow you to teach young children how to prepare for time in the great outdoors; they can learn to load a backpack with their own drinking water and snacks.

Because a hike is really just a long walk, you can also help your older children learn good practices in the great outdoors. What does “leave no trace” mean? How often should you take a break, and what does it mean to air out your feet? Healthy hiking includes breaks and regular foot care.

Beat the Heat

Visit one of the many water features in the area to help you beat the heat. If you’ve got children who are interested in learning to camp, getting them in the habit of regular cooling and rest will keep them safer when you’re ready to get the tents out.

You can also book a cabin or a resort at a higher elevation. Even if the sunlight is warm at midday, you’ll appreciate cooler temperatures at night.

Let the Kids Explore!

Book a vacation trip at a resort that offers family-friendly bicycle trails. If your children are old enough to ride on their own, it’s possible to find vacation spots with wide walking and cycling paths. Many of these locations also offer space for horses; if your children have never learned to share trails with horses, this can be an amazing experience.

Forest Bathe

Plan a vacation at a spot with a water feature that is family-friendly. Once your little ones are played out and trying to wind down, you can take them into the woods to practice the peaceful activity of forest bathing.

Explore the Natural World with All Your Senses

Download apps that allow you to learn the names of birds and plants using both sounds and images. Of course, you’re going to enjoy watching your little ones have a great deal of fun, make some noise, and expend some energy. However, helping them learn to listen to the forest and focus on the calm that forest exposure can give is also a great lesson.

Enjoy Beautiful Drives

Some of the most beautiful drives in the United States are in the Great Smoky Mountains. Use your GPS, but don’t worry about the time it should take. Take your time and enjoy the scenery!

You and your little ones can find great relaxation in the Great Smoky Mountains. Book a single activity for each day and make time for rest and a puzzle or board game. Relax and enjoy!
