In a small town of just over 4,500 residents outside Boston, a global conversation is about to take center stage. TEDxWaldenPond, organized by public speaking veteran Nick Morgan, will take place on October 30, 2025, and seeks to explore fresh ideas around this year’s theme: “Connecting Worlds.” While it’s a local event, it’s designed to potentially spark curiosity far beyond city limits.
Where Community Meets Global Ideas
TEDx events have always aimed to bring “ideas worth spreading” to local audiences, and Walden Pond is no exception. Morgan’s vision is informed by the belief that society often feels more fractured than ever. “We live in a world that can seem increasingly polarized,” he says. “This event is about exploring those threads of connection, from self to system, that might bring us together in unexpected ways.”
Though “Connecting Worlds” serves as the official theme, TEDx organizers typically offer speakers a broad range of topics. The TEDx structure encourages variety: no single event can be limited to just one subject. “The paradox,” Morgan explains, “is that you’re required to have a theme, but the speakers’ presentations aren’t strictly bound by it. Our theme aims to give the evening a shared identity.”
A Lifetime in Public Speaking
Morgan isn’t just a casual TEDx organizer; his entire career has revolved around the art of communication. Over the years, he’s been a college professor of public speaking, a speechwriter for a state governor, a campaign strategist, and a speaking coach. His first fascination with oratory goes back to a childhood without television in the house—except for one week every four years, when his father would rent a TV so the family could watch the Democratic National Convention. “We were probably the only kids in America who were thrilled to watch political coverage,” Morgan jokes. “But it must have sunk in somewhere because here I am today, deeply committed to public speaking.”
That early spark led to a lifelong passion for hearing—and helping to shape—powerful messages. After watching countless talks, Morgan noticed how often new speakers struggled with overly long practice commitments or complicated rules. “Some TEDx events might require rehearsals for nearly a year,” he says. “I love preparation, but that kind of schedule can feel tough for a 10-minute talk. I wanted to make the process a bit simpler and more fun.”
A Personal Touch in a Small-Town Setting
One of the most distinctive aspects of TEDxWaldenPond is its setting. The town itself has fewer than 5,000 residents, no high school, and only a handful of community gathering places. While this might seem like a hurdle, Morgan views it as an opportunity to keep the event intimate and warm. “TEDx wants you to build local community first,” he explains. “That’s harder when your town is this small, but it also means people often feel a strong sense of belonging.”
This year’s event will take place in a unique venue—a de-consecrated church with geometric stained-glass windows that serve as a striking backdrop for filming. “It turned out to be a nearly perfect stage,” Morgan says. “Those windows create a really dramatic look on camera, and we didn’t have to invest thousands of dollars on additional set design.”
Navigating the Rules and Keeping It Fun
TEDxWaldenPond currently operates under the standard TEDx license, which caps the audience at 100 attendees and limits ticket prices. While 100 seats might sound intimate, Morgan sees it as a way to build meaningful connections among those who attend. “The smaller the group, the more it feels like a shared experience,” he says. “Long term, we’d love to grow beyond that. But for now, we’re proud to host an event that feels personal.”
That doesn’t mean there haven’t been humorous challenges. Morgan recalls one attendee who suggested that, given the ticket price, there should be a full spread of food and wine before the event. “I wish we had the budget for that!” he laughs. “In reality, we’re working hard just to keep the lights on and the show running smoothly.”
Looking Toward October
Though Morgan has orchestrated TEDxWaldenPond for only a few years, the event has already cultivated a loyal following. “Our email list started small, but it’s growing,” he notes. “We’re learning that word-of-mouth often travels fast in a tight-knit community.”
With the date set for October 30, 2025, Morgan encourages locals—and anyone else craving a night of thought-provoking ideas—to grab a seat. “Our goal is to leave people feeling both inspired and connected,” he says. “You might come in alone, but hopefully, you’ll leave with a new sense of how our worlds might come together.”
