“If a school is viewing me as a professional and treating me as such, I’m going to stick around longer.” That is how Paul Buckley, Founder and Managing Owner of Ratio Staffing, framed the stakes on Talking About Kids with host R. Bradley Snyder. Paul argues that real choice for schools and educators leads to stability for children. His answer is a platform that lets both sides connect directly, without buyout fees or hidden limits.

The Problem: Substitutes Without Choice Or Fit

Paul Buckley has worked in classrooms and in operations. He has seen how staffing practices shape daily care. On the podcast, he described a core issue plainly: “There are substitute staffing agencies that supplant a kind of standard staffing model upon preschool and it doesn’t work.” He said schools often cannot hire the people they like. As he put it, “they have to buy the teacher out of their contract, which the schools can’t afford.”

The result is low control for everyone. “Just like the teacher has no say in where they go,” he noted. Schools meet ratios. Classrooms may not get the right skills. Children feel the churn.

What Ratio Staffing Changes

Paul founded Ratio Staffing to restore choice and speed. “I think on a technical level, it makes it different if you’re allowed, you have the opportunity and the ability to connect with substitute teachers, enrichment teachers and speech pathologists in real time.” He added, “there’s real time availability and there’s direct connection.”

There are no buyout fees. There are no blackout periods. Schools decide who comes in. Educators choose where and when they work. “They get to decide where they go. No one tells them where to go or when to go.”

Why This Matters For Teachers And Kids

Paul links staffing to trust, prep time, and stability. He started with a simple measure of respect: “So if a school is viewing me as a professional and treating me as such, I’m going to stick around longer because I’m respected and I’m happy and I know I have time to go about my day and do my job that I’m good at.”

He also tied climate to planning. Programs that plan for absences keep energy steady. That supports co-regulation. It reduces stress for adults and children. He stressed that education involves “emotional hours” that a spreadsheet cannot capture.

How Profiles Improve The Match

In the status quo, many schools do not see who is coming. Teachers do not see where they are going. Paul described a different flow on Ratio. Schools create profiles and post openings. Educators build profiles that showcase their age-group experience, philosophy, training, and years in the field. Schools can review details before they connect. Teachers can save their favorite schools and apply to posted jobs.

This helps fit, not just coverage. If a teacher thrives with toddlers or Reggio-inspired settings, leaders can see that. A better match protects continuity. It also lowers turnover costs that drain limited budgets.

Three Quick Checks For Parents

Paul offered simple rules of thumb for families touring preschools. First, ask about teacher preparation. “When’s the prep time? Is it built into the schedule?” Second, ask how the school covers staff outages. His experience is that clear plans lead to healthier teams. Third, trust your reading of the environment. “How do you feel when you’re there?”

These checks reveal whether a school backs its teachers. They also hint at the consistency a child will experience.

Bay Area Focus And A Broader Invitation

Ratio Staffing is building its community in the San Francisco Bay Area. The platform includes substitute teachers, enrichment instructors, and speech-language pathologists. The aim is simple. Better matches. Faster connections. Calmer days for kids.

Paul summed up the mission in terms of choice and respect. Schools choose. Educators choose. Children benefit. Or in his words about the platform’s purpose, “I want to bring calm to the world.”
