It is always a good idea to be prepared, but this is especially true before you shop for anything, and a health insurance policy is no exception. Here are five essential factors to consider before purchasing a health insurance policy. Let’s explore them below:

1. Consider the Things that Your Family Needs Most

The most important thing you should focus on is what your family needs to have covered under your plan. This is a very subjective answer. For example, you may have one family member with more health needs than the others, or you may plan to have a baby next year. Someone else may need to have surgery. Also, consider your current plan. Are you searching for a new one because something is lacking in your current plan?

The best thing to do is ask your family members these questions so that you can have everyone’s input. This will help you decide what type of health insurance policy will work best for you and your family members.

2. Decide How Much Health Insurance You Can Afford

You will need to select your health insurance plan based on the answers you get from the first question. Then, you can examine each plan and make sure that the one you choose covers the things that your family members need. This is the time when you can choose the plan based on the price you would need to pay for everything.

For example, determine how much you would pay for your premiums. Ask if there are any copayments or coinsurance payments. Find out how much your deductible would be. If there is an out-of-pocket limit, don’t forget to find out what this will be. The answers to these questions will tell you how much your health insurance plan could cost for the year.

3. Do You Need Prescription Drug Coverage?

If you or a family member are taking prescription drugs, you will want to make sure that the health plan you choose covers those particular drugs. You can also find out how much your insurance plan will pay for these medicines. The document where insurance companies list the prescription drugs they cover is what is called a “formulary.” Check this formulary to make sure that the plan you are considering purchasing covers your prescription medications.

4. Consider a Plan that Accepts Your Preferred Providers

You may prefer to go to a particular provider or hospital. If so, the provider or hospital must be in the network of the health insurance plan you are considering. The insurance plan may pay out-of-network providers less, or they may deny these claims altogether. Then, you would be responsible for paying these claims out of pocket.

5. What is the Claims Settlement Ratio?

The claims settlement ratio is an important figure to review before choosing a health insurance plan. It represents the percentage of claims that an insurance company processes and resolves within a financial year. Selecting a plan from a company with a higher ratio may indicate a more substantial track record of resolving claims efficiently.
