In an era when information moves faster than verification, the pursuit of truth remains both complex and essential. For nearly forty years, Global Polygraph Network (GPN) has worked at the center of that pursuit, connecting trained professionals and clients across continents in the practice of forensic psychophysiology, better known as polygraph testing.

Founded in 1987 by Michael Martin, GPN began as a small investigative agency in New Jersey under the name Priority Security Systems, Inc. Before long, its focus on truth verification grew beyond private investigations. Martin’s early experience administering polygraph examinations for national media outlets during the 1980s brought both public attention and logistical challenges. Clients from across the country sought his services, but the cost and distance limited his reach. To meet the growing demand, Martin began forming a professional network of qualified examiners, a model that would ultimately transform into the world’s first and largest polygraph referral service.

By the mid-1990s, that informal collaboration evolved into a structured operation that connected examiners across the United States. What began as the Nationwide Polygraph Network soon became the Global Polygraph Network®, extending access to clients in Canada and other countries by 2003. In 2023, the company secured a United States

service mark for its name, formally protecting the brand and its identity as a leader in professional lie detection.

Building a Standard for Integrity

GPN’s growth has always been tied to its adherence to professional ethics and rigorous qualification standards. Every examiner in the network is a graduate of an American Polygraph Association (APA)–accredited training school, and each must pass a detailed screening and quality-control review before joining. Martin estimates that nearly half of all applicants are denied membership due to insufficient experience or a lack of current certification.

Once accepted, examiners are required to complete continuing education to remain current with the latest APA-validated techniques and testing standards. This commitment to training is paired with transparency: examiner credentials and pricing are published openly on the organization’s website, and written reports are provided at no additional charge. These practices have helped the company maintain an A+ accreditation from the Better Business Bureau, a mark of its long-standing credibility.

From its headquarters in Elmira, New York, GPN operates as a Pennsylvania-domiciled corporation authorized to do business in multiple U.S. states. The company’s structure has evolved, but its mission has remained consistent: to connect clients with certified, ethical, and scientifically grounded examiners who deliver reliable results.

Science, Training, and Method

Polygraph testing, at its core, measures physiological changes, heart rate, respiration, and skin conductivity to identify signs of deception. Yet GPN emphasizes that technology alone does not produce accuracy; it is the examiner’s training and adherence to validated procedures that determine reliability. According to studies referenced by the company, when conducted properly, specific-issue polygraph testing is generally reliable and highly accurate.

Martin and his network have long distinguished accurate polygraph testing from unproven alternatives such as voice stress analysis (VSA), which U.S. government agencies have found unreliable. GPN’s position is clear: only scientifically supported methods should be used when truth verification carries legal or personal consequences.

Global Reach and Professional Recognition

Today, GPN coordinates polygraph examinations at more than 500 locations worldwide, serving individuals, corporations, and government clients. The network’s operations extend far beyond the United States, with qualified examiners available to support law enforcementrecruitment, private investigations, and corporate inquiries. Notably, GPN participated in

testing programs for the Jamaica Constabulary Force and in special events such as the White Marlin Open, demonstrating the company’s ability to adapt its methods across cultural and professional contexts. Michael Martin has worked as a forensic psychophysiologist and polygraph examiner since the 1980s and has conducted numerous examinations. He became widely known as television’s “Lie Detector Guy” for frequent appearances on a range of shows and news programs as a polygraph expert, including 20/20, 48 Hours, Fox News, MythBusters, and others.

A Philosophy Rooted in Professional Responsibility

For Martin, the longevity of GPN stems from a simple principle: truth carries responsibility. The company’s procedures emphasize client understanding, examiner accountability, and scientific validity at every step. Whether conducting a personal relationship test, an employment screening, or a criminal investigation, the focus remains on fairness, transparency, and respect for all parties involved. Beyond its commercial services, GPN has played an educational role in shaping industry standards. Its founder has authored two instructional texts, Polygraph Theory (1994) and  PDD Testing for Domestic Issues (2019), which continue to serve as resources for both new and experienced examiners. Through these works, Martin reinforces his belief that integrity in polygraph testing depends not only on the instruments used but on the ethics of those who operate them.

Looking Forward

Nearly forty years after its founding, Global Polygraph Network stands as both a historical and living example of how professional ethics can sustain relevance through technological and social change. From its beginnings as a local investigative service to its current role as a global referral network, the organization has maintained the same principle that inspired its creation, that the truth, when measured responsibly, remains one of society’s most vital pursuits.
