Seattle, WA, was buzzing with excitement as the 9th International Chinese Martial Arts (Wushu) Tournament took center stage on July 30th 2023. Among the sea of skilled competitors, one name stood out above the rest – Michael “The Little Dragon” Vuong, the young and tenacious martial artist – finalist of the Life Academy TV Series.
Victor Migalchan, Hollywood film director and experienced martial artist (creator of the Life Academy), was in attendance to support Michael. Joining Life Academy nurtured Michael’s talents, and Victor Migalchan was filled with pride as he watched Michael Vuong take on the best Wushu athletes.
The tournament was a spectacle of athleticism and precision, but for Victor, the true highlight was Michael’s performance. “I’m happy that Ian Chen, another Life Academy finalist, came to support him with his mother,” Victor remarked. “Veronica Gnip and Josslyn Banh, the other two finalists, were cheering him on online. I love that our finalists think business-wise and aim to bring Wushu tournaments to a higher commercial level. For instance Michael manages not only to win medals but also make money that day”
Michael had indeed grown since he joined Life Academy TV Series and since his last tournament in San Jose. He displayed remarkable improvements in analytical skills, technique, power, focus, and discipline. Victor couldn’t help but admire Michael’s dedication as he trained tirelessly in the days leading up to the competition. The young athlete’s hunger for victory was palpable, and his analytical approach to training set him apart from his peers.
Michael encountered a minor setback when he won a silver medal in one of the events. However, rather than letting disappointment consume him, Michael used it as a wake-up call. “As a martial artist, he needed a proper warmup and wake-up call, and he used it very well,” Victor explained, expressing his delight and admiration by adding, “His family was proud, and so was I.” The silver medal became the catalyst for Michael’s resurgence, as he went on to claim three consecutive gold medals in spectacular fashion.
Michael’s family played a crucial role in his journey as a martial artist. Their unwavering support and belief in his abilities empowered him to push himself beyond his limits. “Family support is very important; it empowers,” Victor acknowledged. “It also brings more responsibility. Michael didn’t want to lose in front of his family, nor did he want a participation medal.” Michael’s determination to make his family proud fueled his drive to succeed. With every move, he impressed the judges and instilled a sense of awe and fear in his opponents.
Not only did Michael showcase exceptional martial arts skills, but he also possessed a unique advantage that set him apart from the competition. He had prior TV experience, making him a star of the TV show “Life Academy.” This exposure and his business-oriented mindset gave him a distinct edge over his fellow athletes. This combination of talent, skills, and showmanship put the Life Academy finalists head and shoulders above the rest.
As the tournament concluded, Master Li Tianyuan, the event’s organizer, shared her plans to have contact competitions such as Sanda next year, hinting at the exciting new challenges that awaited the participants. Moreover, she extended an invitation to Victor to compete, a proposition that filled him with excitement. Although he hadn’t fought in official competitions since 2013, the prospect of a comeback thrilled him. “My comeback might be a fun experience,” he said.
Victor was no stranger to success in Wushu, having secured world and international gold medals in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017, along with a collection of other honors. He believed that Wushu needed a commercial approach to elevate it to new heights. “Wushu needs commercial minds like Dana White or myself, to bring it to another higher level. Only this way will Wushu (Chinese Martial Arts) develop,” Victor asserted. He knew that blending martial arts expertise with business knowledge would lead to unprecedented growth and recognition for Wushu. “What we have right now is good. We have good martial arts teachers and good knowledge, but there is no business knowledge involved. We will try to improve that,” he added.
As the cheers and applause echoed through the arena, the 9th International Chinese Martial Arts Tournament came to a close. Michael “The Little Dragon” Vuong emerged as a symbol of hard work, determination, and the unwavering support of his loving family. Victor Migalchan beamed with pride, knowing that the future of Wushu was in safe hands with Michael and his fellow Life Academy finalists leading the charge. However this is just the beginning for Michael, the difficult part is to hold the title.Â
