When consumers hear about travel eSIMs, the conversation often starts with technology: compatible devices, QR codes, network coverage, activation settings, and data allowances.

But more than 11,000 redemptions of Jetpac Eterna on its first day suggest travelers may respond better to a simpler proposition: knowing they can message someone, open a map, or book a ride when they land.

Jetpac reported that the benefit of its travel eSIM saw more than 11,000 redemptions on its first day. This level of response offers an interesting insight into what might make an eSIM offering immediately relevant in a product category which many consumers are still getting to know.

Eterna provides travelers with a free eSIM which they can keep for their next international trips. When on eligible journeys, users are given 100 MB of free data as well as access to necessary apps such as WhatsApp, Google Maps, Uber and Grab. After the free data has been used up, access to those essential apps remains available for the trip. Those travelers who need more data can buy a top-up from Jetpac.

The complimentary data provided is not meant to take the place of a full travel data plan; rather, it deals with a particular and familiar aspect of the journey. That is, the phase right after arrival.

It is at these times that travelers most urgently need connectivity. They might need to let somebody know that they have arrived, work out the way to their accommodation, get details of their reservation, contact a driver or make arrangements for transportation. In the absence of mobile data they have to look for airport Wi-Fi, consider the expensive option of using their roaming service or wait until they can buy a local SIM card.

Eterna turns that situation into a clear advantage. Travelers have no need to know how an eSIM is set up or which systems are involved in making the connection. All they need to do is understand that they will have essential connectivity ready when they arrive.

Simplicity May Matter More Than Technical Detail

The eSIM sector in the field of travel has in the past focused on destination coverage, the amount of data offered and the cost per gigabyte. These factors are still important, especially when travellers have large data requirements.

Yet they do not always provide the simplest method of introducing the category to a person who has never used an eSIM.

When a consumer is looking at a number of different providers with whom they are unfamiliar, they might not at first know if a 5 GB plan, a regional package or a country-specific option is suitable for them. This is because a promise focusing on the first few minutes after arriving is more easily recognised since it links the technology to a situation that travellers have already gone through.

The initial response to Eterna does not necessarily prove how frequently every person who redeemed it will use the benefit. Free products naturally attract attention, and redemption figures could be different from activation and continued usage.

The fact that more than 11,000 redemptions were attracted in one day shows that the idea was simple enough to elicit an immediate response; in a field which can still seem technical or unfamiliar, clarity is important.

From a One-Trip Purchase to Something Travelers Keep

Eterna also shows a broader shift in the way travel eSIMs can be presented.

At present, many travelers buy an eSIM for a particular destination and use it on one journey; they then have to carry out the process of searching and installing it again before their next trip.

The use of a reusable eSIM changes that situation. Once Eterna has been claimed and installed, it can remain on the user’s phone for future eligible journeys. Instead of treating connectivity as another product to research before every departure, the traveler already has a starting point in place.

This could well be one of the main reasons why the product was so popular at an early stage. The offer isn’t just complimentary data; it is the possibility of setting things up once and then having a useful travel advantage for future journeys.

It causes the eSIM to seem less like a temporary data package and more like one of a traveller’s usual digital tools.

Eterna Returns on October 6

Those who missed the first one will be able to see it again when Jetpac Eterna comes back on October 6.

Jetpac has stated that the new release will be a limited edition, with only a limited number of redemptions available. Those who want to claim the benefit may therefore have to act quickly when it goes live.

The fact that the first 11,000 redemptions have taken place already provides a helpful indication for the wider eSIM industry. Travelers probably do not require any further technical explanations of what an eSIM is, but they might need better reasons to incorporate it into their travel plans.

In the case of Eterna, the reason is simple: install it before you leave, retain it for future trips and have access to the apps that are most important in the first moments after arrival.
