Different people have varying opinions as to what makes a movie great. Some argue that the most critical part is perfecting the technical aspects, such as screenplay, direction, and scoring, while others say that the best features evoke emotions from their audiences. But for insightful filmmaker Victor Migalchan, a profound story makes a standout film. As a result, the esteemed showrunner and entertainment industry authority is recognized for his exceptional portfolio as a director, producer, and showrunner.
This time, however, the distinguished professional has created a documentary that puts a well-deserved spotlight on the inspiring Cung Le. He is a Vietnamese-American retired MMA fighter and world champion martial artist who made waves in the sports scene for his stellar professional kickboxing record of 17–0. On top of that, he is a talented actor who appeared in several high-profile projects, including the live-action Tekken film, where he portrayed the character of Marshall Law.
However, more than Cung Le’s stellar accomplishments, the upcoming film also showcases his experience with adversity and incredible journey toward finding his passion for martial arts. Victor shared, “From an early age, Cung Le chose martial arts to be his main specialty. He competed in different martial arts events, including world and international championships. He had to train himself and train his students; at the same time, he had to work in order to help his mother, who took many jobs to support the family economy. When you combine so many responsibilities – that is very challenging. Nowadays, athletes just train, eat, rest and meet sponsors. Cung Le had to figure out everything on his own: the strategies, prepare himself for fights, prepare his students, nutrition, work, and rest.”
Not only that, but it also talks about the plethora of challenges he faced as an immigrant, which include adapting to a new culture and language at a very young age. In addition, the biography also touches on sensitive yet relevant topics, such as the bullying experienced by immigrant children at the hands of their peers and classmates. In doing so, the documentary expertly encapsulates and highlights the amazing man’s heart, wisdom, and spirit, which were all instrumental in his success.
When asked what pushed him to bring the legendary man’s story to a wider audience, Victor proudly explained that as a martial artist himself, he looked up to Cung Le’s admirable perseverance, drive, and dedication. “Thanks to him, I learned a lot and could avoid many mistakes in my martial arts competitive career. When we finally met, after a few meetings, I was given a chance to record an interview with Cung Le and was fascinated. I can’t express how blessed and grateful I am for the trust given to me. Cung Le opened up and shared so many stories which have never been shown and shared in media and TV,” the director shared. “Besides, when Cung Le received our offer to film this documentary he already had a few offers from a few pretty powerful companies and he still decided to choose us. It was inspiring and a very happy news for us. Step by step we work hard to earn trust and cherish it”, says Victor. Now we have an amazing opportunity to witness the rise of the new MMA Star, Anthony Le – Cung Le’s son.
As such, the visionary filmmaker worked with his trusted business partner Edward Cologna to create a documentary that honors and brings justice to Cung Le’s inspiring story. Currently, the material is under post-production and will most likely be ready by early next year. As a testament to their commitment to the film, the dynamic duo is already planning on entering it in several respected film festivals as well as sending it to distribution companies and networks worldwide.
