“A child’s self-worth shouldn’t depend on a button, a like, or a post. But right now, it does. It’s a mental health concern that is closely tied to technology,” Michael Davis shared with host Danielle Baker on the Talk To Danielle podcast.

Davis, founder of MindfulBytes.io and CEO of Merek Security Solutions, has spent decades in cybersecurity and psychology, but his current focus is helping kids navigate the digital world in a way that supports their well-being.

Integrating Mindfulness into Digital Education

Davis has spent over 25 years working in cybersecurity. Now, he’s combining mindfulness with psychology to help children navigate their digital lives in a more mindful way. His innovative K-5 curriculum at MindfulBytes.io has shown promising results:

  • 85.7% of students were actively engaged during the pilot programs.
  • Cyberbullying incidents reduced by an estimated 40%.

Through mindfulness and digital education, Davis believes that cyberbullying and digital anxiety may be mitigated—before they develop into more serious long-term struggles.

“Cybersecurity today often focuses too heavily on shaming individuals,” Davis explained. Traditional methods tend to blame users for their mistakes rather than understanding the underlying behaviors. His approach, called the “REACH Framework,” emphasizes human behavior and mindfulness:

  • Recognize digital habits and their potential emotional impact.
  • Engage in mindful security, rather than reacting from fear.
  • Adapt to digital threats using critical thinking.
  • Connect with others in meaningful ways, not just virtually.
  • Harmonize technology with human psychology, rather than letting it control behavior.

Simple Advice for Parents and Schools

During his interview with Baker, Davis provided practical advice for families and educators.

“We need to normalize conversations about technology,” he urged.

Start with “training wheels”: Use monitoring tools and set digital boundaries.
Gradually increase responsibility: Check in regularly, rather than giving full access all at once.
Encourage open conversations: Ask kids how they feel about technology instead of just imposing rules.
“We wouldn’t just give car keys to a child,” he noted. Parents can begin with monitoring apps, gradually giving kids more freedom as they prove they can handle it responsibly.

Building Emotional Connections with Technology

One of Davis’s most unique strategies is helping kids form an emotional connection with technology—beyond just mindlessly scrolling. “I ask kids, ‘What does technology smell like to you?’ They pause, think, and suddenly they’re more aware of their senses,” he said. This approach helps children stay connected to their emotions, instead of becoming disconnected behind screens.

Personal Inspiration and Professional Impact

Davis shared that his motivation comes from his own experiences. Growing up in South Carolina was challenging, but a teacher named Ms. Sharon Merek inspired him and helped him realize his potential. To honor her, Davis named his cybersecurity firm, Merek Security Solutions. His firm has worked to reduce organizational cybersecurity risks by significant margins and improve incident response times.

Taking the Program Nationwide

Davis’s next goal is to bring MindfulBytes.io to schools nationwide. His vision is to make digital mindfulness education as standard as health class—because, in today’s world, technology affects well-being just as much as nutrition or exercise. He hopes to equip kids, parents, and educators with the tools they need to stay safe online.

As he openly shared with Baker, Davis believes that addressing cyberbullying and digital wellness should be as routine as “washing your hands.”

His message to parents and teachers is simple: while discussing technology may initially feel uncomfortable, it is a critical conversation—and it gets easier over time.

For those interested in bringing MindfulBytes.io to their school, Davis encourages them to start the conversation today. To learn more, visit https://www.merek.io/ or connect with Davis at michael@merek.io.
