Lucas Gorelick may only be 16 years old at the moment, but he has established himself successfully as an effective ally in politics for any well-meaning politician, an accomplishment that very few people triple his age have had the privilege of achieving in their lifetime. He has proven that when it comes to being actively involved in politics, age is not a hindrance to connecting with the right people, being part of life-changing advocacies, and supporting organizations that intend to make a significant difference in the lives of people. If anything, Lucas has shown how he can be more mature and passionate than most adults who engage in politics today.
Lucas’ political involvement started when he was only 14 years old when he hosted a Joe Biden event at his house in February 2020. At that time, he was invited to become part of the Biden for President Team as a fellow. As part of that team, he was also actively involved with a practical initiative to help people at the onset of the pandemic, from organizing phone banks to hosting socially distanced events and curing ballots after the election, among others.
The time he spent with the Biden campaign team proved to be quite an experience for Lucas Gorelick as he saw people in action. Throughout the course of the campaign, he had the privilege of rubbing elbows with a lot of prominent individuals, including Julian Castro, the former secretary of housing and urban development. His time with Biden’s team also paved the way for him to support other campaigns of candidates that he believed had what it took to make a difference. These included Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, who both ran for senator.
Today, Lucas is a campaign finance intern for Sen. Cortez Masto from Nevada, and his work involves doing in-depth research on how to generate potential funds for the campaign. Apart from this exciting responsibility, he is also involved in other well-meaning advocacies and initiatives. He is involved in Students Demand Action, a gun sense organization that fights for more background checks and gun safety. In March 2020, he was appointed Nevada field office president after he became well-known for his passionate campaign on the importance of gun safety.
To say that Lucas Gorelick is unlike anyone his age is an understatement. Without expecting anything in return for himself, he worked tirelessly to support worthy candidates and promoted advocacies that he knew would protect lives for many generations to come. At the end of the day, Lucas does all these things—on top of his education—to contribute in making his country better.
“I’m motivated by wanting to grow a better future for myself, my country, and the generations to come. It would be irresponsible to leave our country’s problems unsolved. Other than that, I want to take away the division that our country is facing,” he explained.
As early as now, Lucas sees himself working in Washington D.C. after finishing college, where he knows he can push his personal advocacies further. He intends to fight in order to change the many poor decisions that this generation’s predecessors have left behind. From the education system to gun laws and racial discrimination, Lucas believes that great improvements are needed.
By sharing his story, he hopes to inspire young people to never be held back by what some adults say and instead fight to let their voices be heard. Lucas believes that no one is too young to inspire change today and in the future.
