Three years ago, a vision to memorialize the profound losses experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic was actualized. September 17th marks a significant date in collective memories—it is the day the permanent national COVID-19 memorial opened its doors to the public in 2021. This sanctuary of remembrance, known as Rami’s Heart COVID-19 Memorial, was founded by Rima Samman-Whitaker, whose dedication to supporting families affected by the pandemic has been unwavering.

The creation of Rami’s Heart was born out of a necessity to acknowledge and honor the lives that were abruptly taken by this unforeseeable global crisis. The impact of COVID-19 stretched far beyond the confines of health and medical concerns; it left behind a trail of grief, loneliness, and unprocessed trauma among those who lost their loved ones. Recognizing this, Samman-Whitaker pursued certification in Grief Education in early 2023, reinforcing her commitment to advocating for these families through informed support and understanding.

Rami’s Heart stands as a testament to resilience in the face of adversity. Its foundation is built on recognizing not just the trauma and pain inflicted by the pandemic but also on understanding the importance of providing proper support. “As we approach the third anniversary of Rami’s Heart COVID-19 Memorial, we reflect on the profound impact this memorial has had in honoring lives lost to this devastating pandemic,” says Samman-Whitaker. “Our mission remains steadfast: to provide a place of remembrance, healing, and community support for all who have been affected. Together, we ensure that memories of our loved ones live on.”

This grassroots organization has thrived solely on community funding, a testament to its foundational belief in unity and collective healing. One future goal is to secure grant funding to provide educational scholarships for children who lost parents or guardians due to COVID-19. This endeavor highlights Rami’s Heart’s holistic approach to addressing the long-term impacts of loss.

Over these three years, Rami’s Heart has evolved into more than just a physical space for people to visit; it has become a safe haven where individuals find solace amongst others who share similar stories of loss and recovery through various initiatives, including annual memorials, social gatherings, and therapeutic craft sessions—the memorial offers multifaceted support geared towards facilitating emotional healing.

In addition to fostering individual healing journeys, Rami’s Heart plays an instrumental role in advocating for broader societal recognition of COVID-related losses. By offering tangible representations through memorials and personalized tributes, they ensure that each life lost is remembered not as a statistic but as an irreplaceable individual whose absence leaves an indelible mark on their community.

Engagement with Rami’s Heart extends beyond physical participation—its digital presence via social media platforms like Facebook (@Covid19memorialRamisHeart) and Instagram (@Ramis_heart) offers accessibility for those unable to visit in person. These platforms serve as additional outlets for sharing stories, commemorating loved ones, and staying connected with memorial events and updates.

As individuals navigate through continuous waves of change brought about in the post-pandemic world, Rami’s Heart stands resilient—a beacon guiding all toward communal healing while ensuring that each journey through grief is met with compassion and understanding.

Its existence reminds individuals that even amidst profound loss, there lies an opportunity for connection, remembrance, and renewal.
