Wedding dresses are built to be altered. Many gowns are built for women who are at least 5’10”. If you’re shorter than that, you can expect to have changes made.

Raising or Lowering the Hem

If you’re happy with the fit of the bodice, the hem can be changed easily. If you need a longer gown, it may be possible to add a lace edging or even a fringe. For those who need a slightly longer gown and choose a lace addition, consider matching it to the veil design for a unique, coordinated look.

Adding Bra Cups

Adding fitted bra cups can be a really nice way to be a bit more confident over the course of the day. A sleek, silk gown with few adornments can be beautiful. Adding bra cups can save you the hassle of finding a bra that works well with the garment, especially if it has a low back or is open or loose under the arms.

If your wedding gown features narrow or flesh-colored straps, you can get these customized to the right length when the bra cups are added.

Adding a Train Loop

Gowns with trains are easier to manage at receptions and dances if you have a loop. Depending on the length of your train, you may need multiple looping options. Once the looping buttons are added, invite your Maid of Honor to a fitting so she knows how to address the process of adjusting the train length. Once pictures are done, get it out of the way.

Taking In or Letting Out the Sides

If you find that you lose a bit of weight in the weeks leading up to your wedding, the stress may be getting to you! Work with an alteration specialist for these changes. Lined gowns can be altered, but it’s a multi-step process and you want it done right.

For those who find the perfect gown in the wrong size, this may be the time to consider adding lacings to the gown. A fitted bodice with a flared skirt can be easy to customize, but lacings under the arm may be the best way to get a gown to fit close and show off curves.

Altering the Back

If the back of your gown has a zipper, you can add buttons for something prettier. You may want to add or remove a bow. If your dress is strapless, you may be more comfortable with a corset back so you can snug up the gown for more comfort.

Changing Sleeve Length or Width

Tight sleeves to the wrist can be quite pretty in photos, but you want to be able to put your arms around your partner’s neck for your first dance. Opening up the sleeve circumference can give you great photos and a bit of flexibility.

Your wedding dress can provide a beautiful fit with just a bit of work. Work with your alteration specialist to make sure you’re happy with the look and the feel.
