The Bashundhara Foundation has been a beacon of hope and change for disadvantaged women across Bangladesh, particularly those facing dire financial circumstances. With a focus on sustainable empowerment, the foundation’s interest-free loan program has lifted thousands of women out of poverty, offering them a pathway toward self-sufficiency and a brighter future. This program, designed to help women start or grow small businesses, has had a profound impact on the lives of its beneficiaries and their families, creating ripples of positive change within their communities.
One notable example of this transformative impact is the story of Honufa Begum, a resident of Durgarampur village in Brahmanbaria. For years, Honufa faced the crushing weight of financial instability. Struggling to provide for her children, she lived with the constant worry of not being able to meet basic needs. Without access to resources or opportunities, her hopes for a better life seemed out of reach. However, everything changed when she became a recipient of a Bashundhara Foundation loan.
With the loan, Honufa was able to purchase a sewing machine and start her own tailoring business. The decision to invest in this venture marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life. What once seemed impossible—financial security and stability—became a reality. Today, Honufa runs a thriving business that not only sustains her family but also allows her children to attend school, offering them opportunities she once feared they would never have. Her journey from hardship to independence is a testament to the power of the Bashundhara Foundation’s initiatives.
Honufa’s story, while inspiring, is far from unique. Since its inception, the Bashundhara Foundation has distributed over Tk26 crore in interest-free loans, impacting more than 27,000 families in the region. These loans have empowered women to become entrepreneurs, invest in their futures, and improve their quality of life. Many recipients have started small businesses, purchased essential goods to support their livelihoods, or used the funds to pursue further education. The loans, free from the burden of interest, ensure that recipients can focus on growth and stability without the stress of debt accumulation.

Recently, the Bashundhara Foundation hosted a loan distribution ceremony in Bancharampur upazila, which underscored the ongoing success of the program. During the ceremony, over 480 women received loans, amounting to a total of Tk78.05 lakh. Each of these women, like Honufa, now has the opportunity to embark on a journey of financial independence. The ceremony was a moment of celebration and gratitude, as beneficiaries expressed their heartfelt thanks to the foundation and shared their plans for using the loans to create meaningful change in their lives.
The driving force behind this impactful program is Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, whose vision for empowering disadvantaged communities remains at the core of the foundation’s mission. By focusing on social welfare and providing interest-free loans, the foundation is making a powerful statement about its commitment to uplifting vulnerable populations. For many women in rural Bangladesh, access to such financial support was once a distant dream. Now, thanks to the Bashundhara Foundation, they have the means to transform their lives and contribute to the economic and social fabric of their communities.
The impact of the foundation’s work goes beyond financial relief. It fosters a sense of dignity and empowerment among women who may have otherwise remained trapped in cycles of poverty. As these women grow their businesses and gain economic independence, they become role models for others in their communities. This cycle of empowerment is key to the foundation’s broader goal of creating a more equitable and prosperous Bangladesh.
The Bashundhara Foundation’s loan program demonstrates how targeted support can create lasting change. By focusing on women—who often bear the brunt of economic hardship—the foundation is not only addressing immediate financial needs but also helping to break long-standing cycles of poverty. As these women invest in their futures, they are also investing in the future of their families and communities, building a stronger and more resilient nation.
Through stories like that of Honufa Begum and the many others who have benefited from the foundation’s support, it is clear that the Bashundhara Foundation is a powerful force for good. Its interest-free loan program continues to be a cornerstone of poverty alleviation efforts in Bangladesh, offering hope and opportunity to those who need it most. With each new loan distributed, another woman is given the chance to rise above her circumstances and build a life of dignity, independence, and hope. As the foundation’s work continues, the future for these women—and for Bangladesh as a whole—looks brighter than ever.
