Among the many ways societies around the world are changing at the moment, the aging of the world’s population might be one of the most profound. Almost every country in the world reports the phenomenon, with the United Nations reporting that, globally, the 65+ age group is growing faster than any other.
It’s happening in the United States, too — US Census Bureau data shows that, between 2021 and 2022, the median age in the country increased by 0.2 years. Baby boomers are getting older, and the country’s starting to feel it. Most importantly, however, they’re starting to feel it, too.

The decrease in mobility that happens as we age is a part of natural processes. Our muscles become weaker, our bones become more brittle, and we become overall less resilient. Things get worse when they’re compounded by disease. Arthritis is one of the most common health issues that affect mobility, causing a gradual decrease in the range of motion of the affected joints. Movement might be painful and difficult, then gradually reduce to the point where it’s barely possible, leading people to require mobility aids.
The issues with balance and coordination, which are also common as people age, can lead to a whole other host of problems.
