Earning a degree while maintaining a full-time career requires an educational model that strips away standard campus distractions. For 55 years, Amberton University has built its entire structure around this reality, catering to a student body with an average age of 40. The institution is officially entering its 55th year of operation. The 2026-2027 academic year begins a major milestone for the university.

The institution started as an extension campus of Abilene Christian University in Mesquite, Texas. In 1974, the campus moved to Garland, Texas. Administrators designed the campus for working professionals. They eliminated traditional college elements like dormitories, cafeterias, and athletic teams. In 1981, the institution received regional accreditation. The university separated from Abilene Christian University in 1982. It was named Amber University before becoming Amberton University in 2001. An additional center opened in Frisco, Texas, in 2006.

An Affordable Pay-As-You-Go System

Amberton University maintains an affordable, pay-as-you-go tuition model. Tuition rests at a stable $325 per credit hour. Most graduate degrees cost between $9,000 and $11,000 in total. Dr. Carol A. Palmer, the President of Amberton University, explained the financial strategy clearly, “We don’t have dorms, we don’t have cafeterias, we don’t have housing, sporting teams, all that. So that’s how we keep our costs down. We save money, and we pass that savings on to the student.”

This approach allows students to pay for one course at a time. Students do not face lump-sum semester bills or hidden campus fees. The model significantly reduces long-term loan pressure. Eligible students can access federal financial aid, payment plans, and military benefits.

Strategic Infrastructure Investments

The higher education landscape faces severe budget pressures in 2026. Many universities are cutting programs and reducing staff to survive. Amberton University is moving in the opposite direction.

The university is currently making a multi-million-dollar investment in technology and campus infrastructure. Plans are underway to break ground on a major building remodel in late 2026. The project will transform existing facilities into a high-tech campus.

Dr. Palmer noted that Amberton is introducing a new curriculum while other schools are cutting budgets. The university remains healthy and financially stable. The infrastructure upgrade includes new streaming capabilities, hybrid-ready rooms, and smart boards. The university is creating dedicated Zoom rooms and podcast rooms for students. These spaces allow adult learners to study comfortably after hours and collaborate effectively.

High-Demand Programs and Academic Success

Academic programs at Amberton emphasize real-world outcomes and professional certificates. The counseling programs comprise roughly 40 percent of total student enrollment. Dr. Palmer highlighted the historical success of the flagship counseling program, noting that the clinical mental health counseling degree, launched in 1990, is the university’s largest degree and leads to licensure in Texas.

Texas residents utilize this degree to become Licensed Professional Counselors. The school counseling program boasts even more striking metrics. Dr. Palmer added that the school counseling program holds exemplary status in the state of Texas, pointing to a 100 percent passage rate on the 252 exam, the standardized school counseling certification test.

Furthermore, a new Ed.D. in Counseling program will be offered in September 2026. This is a wonderful opportunity for students hoping to advance their careers to the next level. Dr. Ken Johnson will be the new Director of the Doctoral program.

Amberton utilizes a unique system of stackable certificates. The university offers 24 graduate certificates and eight undergraduate certificates. Each certificate requires exactly four courses or 12 credit hours. Students can earn these credentials using their elective hours without increasing tuition costs.

Meeting Modern Workforce Demands

The university recently launched two innovative graduate programs. These additions include the Master of Science in Applied Artificial Intelligence and the Master of Healthcare Administration. Both programs have shattered initial enrollment expectations.

The Applied Artificial Intelligence degree exceeded enrollment projections by more than 50 percent. This program focuses on practical application rather than technical coding. Students learn to use artificial intelligence for business strategy, marketing, and ethical decision-making.

The Master of Healthcare Administration program exceeded its enrollment targets by 30 percent. This curriculum incorporates national leadership competencies for long-term care administration. The program features specialized certificates in healthcare leadership, healthcare informatics and Data Analytics, and geriatric healthcare.

The university also introduced a unique certificate in dealership management and operations. This program qualifies individuals to sit for important automotive industry certification exams. Additionally, a new certificate in cybersecurity management addresses vital digital protection needs.

This structure brings direct workplace relevance into every classroom discussion. The university has embedded practical artificial intelligence competencies into every course syllabus. Students gain immediate skills to solve actual workplace problems.

Longitudinal surveys prove the long-term value of an Amberton education. Over 93 percent of graduates state that their degree fulfilled their primary purpose. Amberton University is a non-denominational Christian institution. Faculty and staff members promote core values of honesty, integrity, and mutual respect.
