Kinloch Pecan Oil: A Look At The Man Bringing Pecan Oil To The Mainstream in America

US Insider

Pecan Oil. Statistically, this is not something that is inside most American kitchens. While its mild flavor base and high heat tolerance make it the perfect cooking or finishing oil – it simply hasn’t become as mainstream as avocado, olive, or even peanut oils. With that in mind, we’ve found the perfect pecan oil producer who despite a career in construction and accounting, has dedicated his attention to bringing this oil to kitchens throughout the US.

From CPA to Culinary Innovator

Tommy Hatfield’s journey into the world of pecan oil began after a successful 30-year stint in the construction and building materials business. Armed with a background in accounting, he transitioned back to the family business after college. However, the desire for something new and exciting led him to explore a different path.

In 2004, Tommy took the plunge and founded Kinloch Pecan Oil. The inspiration came from an unexpected source – a friend’s cookbook on pecans that introduced him to the concept of pecan oil. Intrigued by its potential, Tommy delved into researching the market, only to find a lack of knowledge and presence. Undeterred, he decided to start a company from scratch.

Overcoming Challenges and Growing Strong

The initial years saw rapid growth, with Whole Foods as one of their first major clients. As the first company to market refined pecan oil on a national basis, there was much to learn about navigating the competitive oil market. However, challenges emerged as competition increased, requiring the company to reassess its approach. Maintaining a commitment to non-GMO and chemical-free products, Tommy faced the need to find reliable nut oil producers while stepping away from the direct oil production process.

Navigating through the intricacies of the industry, Tommy’s unique approach involved using expeller-pressed oil, a process that retains the purity and flavor of the pecans. He actively involves himself in the packaging process, ensuring a personal touch by featuring the logo – his wife’s plantation home.

A Unique Culinary Experience

Kinloch Pecan Oil stands out not just for its unique story but also for its distinctive qualities. The expeller-pressed method ensures a low-flavor, smokeless cooking oil that allows the natural flavors of the food to shine through. With lower saturated fat content than traditional cooking oils, it’s a healthier alternative for those conscious of their dietary choices.

Tommy’s definition of success extends beyond personal achievements. For clients, success means embracing smokeless cooking, where pecan oil serves as a versatile and healthy substitute for other oils like butter and canola.

Partnering with celebrity chef Corey Bower from Chopped, the aim is to elevate pecan oil’s status in the culinary world, making it a household name globally.

As a testament to his commitment to authenticity and quality, Tommy continues to ship Kinloch Pecan Oil from his hometown of Winnsboro, Louisiana. It’s not just a business; it’s a passion-driven culinary adventure that has brought a touch of Louisiana’s finest to kitchens around the world.
