Memphis, a city known for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant music scene, and iconic landmarks, has been grappling with a rising tide of gun violence in recent years.
According to the latest recorded data, murders committed by juveniles have been on the rise, with alarming numbers reported in the years 2020, 2021, and 2022.
This disturbing trend not only poses a threat to public safety but also has far-reaching consequences, including the impact on the job placement.
In 2020, Memphis recorded a total of 290 murders, out of which 72 were committed by minors. The numbers remained grim in 2021, with 304 murders reported, and 67 of them were committed by juveniles. In 2022, the numbers remained high, with 237 murders, and 59 of them were committed by minors. These statistics highlight the pressing issue of gun violence in Memphis, particularly among young offenders.
One of the major challenges faced by individuals with criminal records, including those who have been incarcerated, is finding gainful employment. The consequences of a criminal record often include stigma, discrimination, and limited opportunities, which can significantly impact job placement prospects. With higher gun violence in certain neighborhoods of Memphis, there is a direct correlation between the prevalence of crime and the availability of jobs in those areas.
In Memphis there are also individuals who are making a difference in curbing gun violence and creating job opportunities for those with criminal records. Entertainment Executive Michael Dockery is one such individual who has taken the initiative to address this issue through his “Stomp the City” ICONIC Award Show. Dockery, a Memphis native, is deeply committed to his city and has been using his platform to make a positive impact.
The “Stomp the City” ICONIC Award Show, which showcase national talent in music and community engagement, dance, and fashion, aims to raise awareness about gun violence and its impact on the community, while also providing opportunities for effective ways to curve gun violence. Dockery believes that creating employment opportunities and offering a platform for talented individuals, he can contribute to reducing gun violence and breaking the cycle of crime in Memphis.
Dockery’s efforts have gained national widespread support and recognition, with local businesses, organizations, and community leaders coming together to support the cause. Through his initiative, Dockery hopes to inspire others to take action and make a difference in their community as well.
He believes that addressing the issue of gun violence and providing job opportunities for individuals with criminal records are crucial steps towards creating a safer and more inclusive society.
