Islamzhan Toibekov is a name synonymous with precision, strategy, and power in the world of Greco-Roman wrestling. With a career spanning numerous international tournaments and a wealth of experience in elite-level competition, Toibekov shares insights into his training regimen, his views on the evolution of wrestling, and his vision for the future of the sport.

Q: Islamzhan, you’ve been a dominant force in Greco-Roman wrestling. How did your journey in the sport begin?

A: My journey started in my early childhood. I was born in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, but my family moved to Kazakhstan, where my father, a seasoned wrestling coach, introduced me to the sport. I started training when I was six years old, and wrestling became a way of life from the beginning. I competed in local tournaments and quickly realized I had a deep passion. With every victory, my confidence and ambition grew.

Q: Greco-Roman wrestling is known for its technical rigor. How do you approach training to maintain an elite level?

A: Consistency and discipline are the foundation of my training. Wrestling at the highest level demands more than strength—it requires strategy, endurance, and mental toughness. I train twice daily, focusing on technique, agility, and strength. A typical session involves rigorous sparring, resistance training, and extensive analysis of past matches to refine my tactics. Nutrition and recovery are equally important. I work with a team that helps my diet and conditioning align with my performance goals.

Q: Can you share a defining moment in your career?

A: One of the memorable moments was my performance at the 2016 international tournament in Tallinn, where I secured fourth place. It was pivotal because it placed me among the top competitors in my weight category and solidified my reputation. That same year, I also won the Open Championship in Bishkek, taking first place in the 130 kg category. These milestones proved that my training and sacrifices were paying off.

Q: Wrestling is evolving with new techniques and training methodologies. How do you see the sport changing?

A: The sport is becoming more scientific. Raw strength played a dominant role in the past, but today, athletes integrate biomechanics, data analytics, and sports psychology into their training. Wrestling is not just about overpowering an opponent—it’s about out-thinking them, predicting their next move, and staying adaptable. I study match footage, analyze grip techniques, and refine my defensive strategies. Adaptability is the key to longevity in this sport.

Q: What advice do you have for young wrestlers who aspire to compete at an international level?

A: First and foremost, discipline is everything. Success in wrestling isn’t just about talent; it’s about persistence, adaptability, and learning from every match, win or lose. I advise focusing on fundamentals, training consistently, and developing a strong mental game. Confidence comes from preparation, so never underestimate the importance of conditioning and tactical awareness. Lastly, always be open to learning from your coaches, teammates, and opponents.

Q: Looking ahead, what are your goals in the sport?

A: I want to contribute beyond competing. I am interested in coaching and mentoring young wrestlers to help shape the next generation of champions. Wrestling has given me so much, and I see it as my responsibility to give back. I also want to collaborate with wrestling academies worldwide, sharing knowledge and helping refine training methodologies to push the sport to new heights.

A: My goal is to be remembered for my achievements and my impact on others in the sport. Wrestling is about resilience and determination; inspiring young athletes to pursue their dreams with the same passion is an essential accomplishment. I want to see the sport continue to evolve and remain a platform for athletes to push their limits and achieve greatness.
