Early childhood education is becoming increasingly recognized for its critical role in the healthy development of new generations. With this movement, innovative approaches are emerging to enhance the learning experience for young children. One such pioneer is Melinda Fornero, a renowned dance instructor and child development expert. With the launch of her new YouTube channel, “Mama Watch Me Dance,” Melinda is bringing her signature dance classes to a global audience, emphasizing the importance of dance in shaping young minds, bodies, and spirits.

A Vision for Early Childhood Development

Melinda Fornero’s journey in dance began at the age of 14, a relatively late start in the dance world. However, her passion and determination propelled her to pursue a career dedicated to integrating dance into early childhood education. With over two decades of experience, Melinda has developed a playful, entertaining, and quirky dance curriculum for children aged 2 to 6. Her goal is to give mothers and teachers the opportunity to witness their children’s musical and dance development firsthand.

Through her dynamic programs, Melinda has observed the transformative power of dance. Children develop musicality, rhythm, choreography skills, teamwork, confidence, and self-esteem. Her approach emphasizes fun, creativity, and the flourishing of children’s imaginations. These benefits align with numerous studies highlighting the positive impact of arts education on young children.

Launching “Mama Watch Me Dance”

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly disrupted traditional education systems, leading to a surge in online learning. According to a report by UNESCO, over 1.5 billion students were affected by school closures at the height of the pandemic. This shift has accelerated the adoption of digital learning platforms, providing an opportunity for educators like Melinda to reach wider audiences.

Melinda recently launched  “Mama Watch Me Dance,” a YouTube channel featuring free 30-minute dance classes and an ongoing 6-week Family Dance Challenge

The challenge invites families to sign up at any time and participate in learning a 3-minute dance routine to the “Mama Watch Me Dance” song, written and composed by Melinda’s husband, Dan Fornero, an LA-based musician and partner for their company, Music N’ Motion.

“Our mission is to make dance accessible and enjoyable for young children while emphasizing its crucial role in their overall development,” said Melinda Fornero. “Through ‘Mama Watch Me Dance,’ we are creating a supportive community where parents can connect and share their experiences as their children learn and grow through dance.”

The Importance of Dance in Early Childhood Education

Dance education plays a crucial role in early childhood development. A study published in the journal Early Childhood Research Quarterly found that children who participated in dance showed improvements in social skills, motor skills, and emotional regulation. These findings are particularly relevant in the context of current educational trends that emphasize holistic development and the integration of arts into the curriculum.

Melinda’s programs are designed to foster these developmental benefits. By providing accessible and engaging dance classes, she is helping children develop essential skills while also promoting physical activity—a key concern given rising childhood obesity rates. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that childhood obesity has more than tripled since the 1970s, with dance offering a fun and effective way to combat this trend.

Expanding Dance Education in Schools

Beyond her YouTube channel, Melinda Fornero has been instrumental in bringing dance education to schools through her programs and curriculums. She founded Music’ N Motion, an initiative that aligns with California Physical Education Standards and provides a structured dance curriculum for preschool and kindergarten classrooms.

Her school programs are tailored to integrate seamlessly into existing educational frameworks, ensuring that dance becomes a core component of early childhood education. These programs not only enhance physical activity but also foster creativity, teamwork, and confidence among young students.

Schools that have run Melinda’s dance programs and after-school enrichment programs include Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD), Redondo Beach Unified School District (RBUSD), Torrance Unified School District (TUSD), and LePort Montessori in Orange County.

Several private preschools have also hosted her programs—from South Gate to Long Beach and throughout the South Bay, including Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, San Pedro, and Rancho Palos Verdes.

Beyond the Classroom

Melinda’s impact extends beyond the classroom. With the launch of her YouTube channel, she is reaching families and teachers worldwide, fostering a positive message and inspiring children to embrace dance as a form of self-expression. Her initiative aligns with the growing trend of digital learning and the increasing demand for quality online educational content.

Driven by her love for dance and early childhood development, Melinda creates a welcoming atmosphere where children can explore movement freely and showcase their growth through performances. Her programs emphasize playfulness, positivity, and personal empowerment, ensuring every child feels welcome and valued.

A Life Dedicated to Dance and Wellness

Melinda is committed to a healthy lifestyle, and she finds joy in tending to her garden, exploring new places through travel, and embracing holistic practices like sound therapy and Reiki. As a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan, she eagerly cheers on her favorite team whenever she gets the chance, showing her passion extends beyond the dance floor and into her personal life.

Melinda Fornero’s journey from a late-starting dancer to a pioneering educator is a testament to the transformative power of her passion and dedication. Through “Mama Watch Me Dance,” she is not only promoting the importance of dance in early childhood education but also creating a vibrant, supportive community for families and educators. In a time when the world is rethinking education, Melinda’s innovative approach offers a path for creativity, joy, and self-expression for young children everywhere.
