Hauling large items can be a real challenge, even for folks who have a few moves under their belts. However, there are several failsafe tactics for safely and carefully getting the job done, no matter your experience level or how much stuff needs to be moved. The main goal is to complete the job without hurting yourself or damaging any goods. Consider the following components of successful and safe hauling of larger items:
Tarps
Even if your move takes place in ideal weather, having a few tarps is still necessary. This is particularly true for large items. Tarps perform multiple functions. In addition to protecting loads from rain, direct sunlight, and dust, they also help keep small items in place. Ensure you get a tarp that’s big enough to cover the whole load and then some. Use tie-downs and bungee cords as needed to hold tarps in place. Check all corners to prevent the tarp from flapping during the trip.
Ratchet Straps & Tie-Downs
It’s one thing to properly distribute the weight of a large item when moving and to keep so many other tips in mind. But much of your hard work and careful planning can be wasted if you don’t secure those larger items before doing anything else. That’s where tie-downs and ratchet straps can truly save the day. Do a little experimenting before choosing where and how to secure heavy loads. Use multiple straps and ties, adjust as needed, and check that they’re in good condition before using them to secure loads.
It’s usually possible to eyeball a couch, refrigerator, or dining table to get a feel for where the straps and ties will need to go. Remember to practice with the ratchet straps before placing them on the item. They can be a bit tricky for first-timers. Once you feel confident, begin slowly with straps and tie-downs, jostling the load to make certain that you’ve placed them in the right areas and tightened them just right.
The Right Loading Equipment
In addition to straps, ties, dollies, and hand trucks, be sure to have a few furniture sliders at the ready if your load includes sofas and similar pieces. Additionally, a first aid kit, work gloves, and plenty of duct tape come in handy. The whole point of having the appropriate equipment is to make the move easier and safer.
But being careful also means there will be less wear and tear on the goods themselves. If you need to lift things up into a truck, rent or borrow a pallet jack or forklift. For most moves, though, you can probably get by with a standard loading ramp to get things from ground level into the back of a truck.
Careful Planning is the Secret Ingredient
Paying attention to detail while planning your move is the smartest way to approach the challenge. Having great equipment is half the battle. Careful planning means finding out in advance what kinds of things you’ll need. Always secure loads, use tarps, distribute weight, and plan your route. Doing so is the wisest strategy for moving large items carefully and successfully.
