Matthew McConaughey, an actor from Uvalde, Texas, addressed the public in an emotional speech at the White House, calling for enhanced gun relations following a recent shooting across America.
The actor, teary-eyed, spoke to the public about how he had to see grieving families from his hometown while they prepared for burial.
“We heard from so many people: Families of the deceased, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, Texas Rangers, hunters, border patrol and responsible gun owners who won’t give up their Second Amendment rights. They all said, ‘We want secure and safe schools, and we want gun laws that won’t make it so easy for the bad guys to get these damn guns.'”
The actor told Congress that the law should compel individuals to wait until they are 21 years old before being allowed access to guns. He also suggested including background checks and other safety measures in order for the law not only to work effectively but, most importantly, keep children safe.
McConaughey is an actor known for his acting roles in movies like “The Wedding Planner” and “Dallas Buyer Club.” But he is also vocal about gun control, writing a piece called “It’s Time to Act on Gun Responsibility,” published by The Austin American-Statesman.
“I believe that responsible, law-abiding Americans have a Second Amendment right, enshrined by our founders, to bear arms. I also believe we have a cultural obligation to take steps toward slowing down the senseless killing of our children,” McConaughey wrote.
“There is no constitutional barrier to gun responsibility,” McConaughey added in the writeup. “Keeping firearms out of the hands of dangerous people is not only the responsible thing to do; it is the best way to protect the Second Amendment. We can do both.”
President Joe Biden is not taking any chances with the violence. He has notified Congress to immediately create laws that would control and gatekeep gun ownership in America while also increasing inspections on those who own them as well.
Lawmakers are joining together to take action on the issue of guns in America. Senator Chris Murphy, a well-known advocate for stronger security measures within schools and tighter gun laws, among other things, has partnered with several others, including Sen. John Cornyn.
