Do Your Workout Clothes Actually Affect Your Performance? Katie Corio, Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach and Founder of Corio Fitness and Corio Active Weighs In

You’ve heard the phrase “dress for success” before, and this statement rings especially true in the world of fitness. Nothing screams “I’m ready to get fit!” more than a good pair of form-fitting, breathable pants. Of course, for some people, dressing up for the gym is a ritual. But, more so than getting into the mindset, most people pay attention to their clothes and how it represents them. However, is there something substantial underneath all that fantastic cloth?

Sweating in Style

There’s a good reason why fancy workout tanks, leggings, and sneakers have become the standard at gyms and fitness centers. Dr. Jonathan Fader, a sports psychologist for the New York Mets, says these findings hold up in real life. “When you put on new fitness gear, you begin to get into character like an actor putting on a costume for a performance,” says Fader. “As a result, you expect a better performance, making you more mentally prepared for the task.”

Katie Corio, Fitness Specialist and Owner of Corio Active, couldn’t agree more: “Right clothing can influence your behavior and attitudes because it carries a symbolic meaning. So, what you wear for your workout can actually subconsciously change how you train.”

Proper clothing can also save you from injuries. Wearing the appropriate clothing and covering when doing specific exercises supports your body in multiple ways. For example, if you are running or biking, avoid wide-leg or loose pants that could get tangled up in the pedals or your feet. Making sure that your clothes are breathable enough is also optimal. You don’t want to run the risk of injuring yourself as much as possible. For some, that means non-irritating cloth like spandex or sweat-resistant cotton. People who enjoy going out for late-night runs also employ the use of high-visibility clothing for their safety.

This goes to show the important role that clothing plays in both safety and comfort for fitness. One of the ideas behind Corio Active is to help people achieve the safety and self-confidence to dress as they choose.

“I wanted to create a brand that could become a community that people feel like they belong to. Corio Active is much more than another clothing brand; it is a platform for sharing amazing women and their accomplishments and stories. We are committed to creating meaning behind every launch. We plan to have many Corio events, fundraisers for charity and tons of other special things up our sleeves,” Katie explains.
