Dance carries history, identity, and emotion. For Aciela, it is also a responsibility. As a Dominican and traditional bachata instructor serving Washington D.C., Virginia, and Maryland, she focuses on preserving cultural roots while helping students build confidence and personal expression.

Her work combines technical training, cultural education, and community building. Through classes, performances, and workshops across the United States, Aciela continues to shape a dance environment grounded in authenticity and inclusion.

From Music School to Latin Dance

Aciela’s artistic background began with music. Growing up in Aktau, Kazakhstan, she attended music school for seven years and performed in a live ensemble playing a traditional Kazakh instrument. Early exposure to rhythm and stage performance built discipline and a strong musical ear.

Although she pursued a different academic direction instead of conservatory training, her connection to music never faded. In 2011, she began taking salsa classes with a Cuban instructor. What started as a short experiment developed into a long-term commitment.

Over time, she trained in multiple Latin dance styles including salsa, merengue, tango, zouk, cha-cha, cumbia, and Afro-Cuban dances. Today, her primary focus is Dominican bachata, a social dance form deeply connected to music and everyday life in the Dominican Republic.

Learning Directly from the Source

Travel to the Dominican Republic and Cuba played a defining role in Aciela’s growth. Instead of relying only on studio instruction, she immersed herself in local dance communities. She trained with artists, attended social events, and observed how dance naturally integrates into daily culture.

Organizations such as UNESCO recognize traditional music and dance as important forms of intangible cultural heritage. Aciela applies this understanding by teaching not only movement patterns but also history, musical structure, and social context.

She studies the evolution of bachata music, collaborates with Dominican musicians, and incorporates live music experiences into workshops whenever possible. According to the National Endowment for the Arts, arts engagement strengthens cultural awareness and social connection. These principles guide her teaching structure.

Teaching Dominican Bachata with Structure and Creativity

Aciela began teaching Latin dance in 2019. Since then, she has developed a method that blends discipline with creative exploration.

Her classes focus on:

  • Musical interpretation and rhythm awareness
  • Body movement fundamentals
  • Cultural background of bachata
  • Partner connection and social dance etiquette
  • Confidence building through guided practice

She holds Bachata Teacher Training Certification from Carlos Cinta completed in 2019 and Bachata Teacher Training Certification from Academic Network of Dance led by Alex and Desiree in 2025. Continuous training remains central to her professional development.

Rather than encouraging students to copy choreography, she guides them toward discovering their own style. Clear structure helps beginners feel secure, while advanced students are challenged to refine musicality and expression.

Competitive Achievements and National Performances

Aciela’s performance career spans major dance cities across the United States, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Miami, Dallas, Denver, Baltimore, and Washington D.C.

Her competitive achievements include:

  • Gold Medal at the Ultimate Latin Dance Championship
  • First place grand championship at Dancing with the Stars Maryland
  • Third place at the San Francisco Bachata Congress Competition
  • Third place at the Queer Afro-Latin Dance Festival Competition

These recognitions reflect technical skill and performance presence. However, Aciela measures success primarily through growth and impact within her community.

Inclusion and Community Impact

Social dance is designed for accessibility. Unlike formal ballroom settings, bachata welcomes people from different backgrounds, ages, professions, and experience levels.

Aciela prioritizes creating welcoming spaces where students feel safe and supported. Her workshops often include open discussions about cultural respect and the origins of dance styles.

Dance also serves as a platform for awareness. She has choreographed performance projects addressing public health concerns and social issues, and she and her partner host fundraising dance events supporting survivors of domestic violence. Through these initiatives, dance becomes both artistic expression and community engagement.

Research from the World Health Organization highlights the positive relationship between arts participation and emotional well-being. Many students report improved confidence, reduced stress, and stronger social connections after consistent dance training.

Long-Term Vision and Professional Growth

Aciela evaluates her progress through two core questions: Is she growing, and is her work helping others grow?

Growth includes ongoing technical training, studying musical history, maintaining physical conditioning, and refining teaching methods. She emphasizes warm-ups, strength exercises, stretching, and breathing techniques to sustain performance longevity.

Impact is measured by student development. Confidence, musical awareness, creative exploration, and community involvement are indicators that her work is meaningful.

Her long-term goal is to continue preserving Dominican bachata traditions while building a supportive dance community in the DMV area and beyond.
