Most people assume that making songs simply entails writing lyrics and adding some melody. However, it is much more than that. Besides its technical aspects, artists like Devin Roy know that creating music is a profoundly personal and intimate process that involves pouring one’s heart out.
The 28-year-old musician was born in Manhattan and raised in the Bronx. He started writing and recording music in 2011 after graduating from high school. At the time, he was kicked out of his mom’s house and was forced to move back with his grandmother.
The then-teenager lived with five other family members in a two-bedroom apartment where he slept on a couch in the living room. He used his art as an outlet to escape, and it fueled him to create music.
Despite that, he always held himself to high standards and felt that his songs were not ready to be made public yet. As he insightfully explained his perspective, the young man said, “I never doubted my talent, but I doubted the quality of my early recordings and I worked to craft my style in a way I really felt comfortable enough to release.”
After nine years of tirelessly working on his craft and honing his skills, Devin Roy finally felt that it was time to share his creations with the world. So in 2020, the inspiring artist released his debut single, “M.A.N.”
Since then, he has hit the ground running and dropped several other hit tracks such as “Blessings,” “Spidey & Motor,” and “A Bear Called Papa,” all of which perfectly reflect the musician’s love for storytelling and intention of being transparent with listeners. In addition, the songs highlight Devin Roy’s musical genius through its cohesive theme and sound and its melodic tones and vulnerable rhymes.
To keep the momentum going, the gifted artist is gearing up for the release of his debut album underneath (The Grey Sky) on February 17th, 2022. Devin Roy candidly shared that he is looking to continue building on the foundation he has established with previous singles through the record.
He said, “With this album, I hope it will show how serious I am and how much I’ve grown into my music. I finally built my album and now it lives forever, I want my fans to ride with me and really connect with me.”
With his extraordinary musical prowess and work ethic, there is no doubt that Devin Roy is on his way to the top of the music industry. Moving forward, he plans to continue creating authentic and genuine music while scaling his reach.
The young artist optimistically shared, “I look forward to the stories I haven’t written yet, where that takes me I still don’t know, but ultimately it’s not for me to decide. Hopefully, I can speak to an even larger audience who feels like I do or can at least feel my energy, but most of all, in five years, I hope to still be unapologetically Devin Roy.”
