For more than 100,000 years, humans have been making and wearing jewelry. Whether worn as talismans, displayed as status symbols, or crafted as a means of personal expression, rings, earrings, and necklaces add meaning to the wearer’s life. No one knows that better than Abdul C.

Abdul founded Highline Custom Jewelry more than 25 years ago. Although it began as a simple family jewelry store, it’s now a custom jeweler serving the San Francisco Bay Area.

“When we first opened, we primarily sold ready-made jewelry,” says Abdul. “Over time, we had more and more customers looking for hard-to-find items. The next logical step was to start taking orders and custom-making items.”

That decision was a pivotal one for the company, but it’s also reflective of a trend that has continued over the past several decades. More people are choosing customized jewelry over traditional luxury brands.

What Is Driving the Shift Away From Luxury Brands

A number of different factors are driving this shift. Pricing at established design houses has climbed steadily, and buyers have grown more attentive to how much of that price reflects materials and craftsmanship.

If you buy jewelry from an established luxury brand, you should expect a certain level of quality in return for your investment. However, a significant portion of the purchase price will go to brand overhead.

For some buyers, that distinction makes the experience behind a piece nearly as important as the finished jewelry itself. Independent jewelers can provide direct access to the people who select the materials, develop the design, and oversee its construction.

How Working Directly With a Custom Jeweler Changes the Process

As a custom jeweler, Highline Custom Jewelry cuts out the middleman. Working directly with a jeweler also changes how the cost breaks down, since less of the price covers brand overhead. Abdul remains involved, working with customers individually, an approach the family business has maintained while extending its reach outside of the Bay Area.

However, buying jewelry involves more than a cost-benefit analysis. Jewelry is and always has been deeply personal, and a custom jeweler can help a client bring their one-of-a-kind vision to life.

“Custom jewelry should feel personal from the first conversation,” he says. “Clients should understand the vision behind what they purchase, how it will be made, and why every single detail belongs in the final design.”

For Abdul, making customized jewelry for clients is an honor, and it’s not something he takes lightly. “When we work one-on-one with a client, we’re not just trying to craft a beautiful piece of jewelry,” he says. “We’re making something that reflects that person’s journey and where they hope to go next.”

For custom jewelers like Abdul, crafting the pieces themselves is only part of the artistry. Not everyone can take a client’s idea, turn it into a concept, and then bring it into being. Collaborating with clients is a vital part of what Highline Custom Jewelry does, and it’s a skill that Abdul has honed over the years.

“We can create any piece of jewelry based on a simple idea that a customer comes up with,” he says. Along with the other jewelers on his team and his sons Isa and Hasan, Abdul is always ready to work with a client to create something they’ll be proud of.

Some of the company’s custom work is remarkably intricate. One piece, a pendant featuring the Golden Gate Bridge in rose gold and diamonds, glimmers with almost 2,700 individually set stones. Another features a blood-red emerald-cut ruby flanked by rows of diamonds.

For Highline Custom Jewelry and its customers, crafting custom pieces is about building something deeply human. “It’s part of who we are,” says Abdul. “We’ve been about quality, detail, and personal connection from the very beginning.”
