At one point, Jonathan Bannister had it all: an established agency, years of momentum, and a team behind him. But despite the outward success, something wasn’t right. Behind closed doors, leadership was misaligned, processes were outdated, and the brand he had once believed in no longer reflected who he had become. So, he made a bold decision: burn it down and rebuild it in a better direction.

“There came a moment when I realised I was carrying the weight of a business that no longer fit the vision,” says Jonathan Bannister. “I had to clean house, starting with the name, the structure, and even the people.”

Breaking Away to Build Again

The turning point came after Bannister finalised a buyout deal with his former business partner, effectively ending an eight-year partnership that had grown strained over time. Though painful, it opened the door to clarity.

“I had to start fresh,” Bannister recalls. “At that point, only three people from my team had been with me for more than five years. Everyone else was new. And that was intentional.”

Rather than patching up a broken system, he chose to tear it down. He restructured the agency around accountability and KPIs and rewrote the internal playbook to reflect his evolved leadership style.

“I was done running a business with blurred roles and misaligned goals,” he says. “We now have clearly defined goals, team metrics, and systems that can scale. That wasn’t something I had before.”

Creating a Culture of Ownership

Bannister’s leadership philosophy today centres on autonomy and results. He values team members who can think critically, manage their own time, and take ownership of outcomes.

“If I hire you, it’s because you’re good at what you do,” he says. “So I’m going to trust you to deliver. But if you need to be micromanaged, it’s just not going to work out.”

It’s a shift from his early days as a founder when he tried to do everything, often at the expense of efficiency and team health. Now, he empowers his people to lead in their own right, while maintaining high standards.

“I’ve learned that leadership isn’t about doing more,” Bannister explains. “It’s about doing the right things and helping your team stay focused on what matters.”

A Brand That Reflects the Vision

Part of the reset meant letting go of the old agency name, Cornerstone Marketing Solutions, and launching a new brand that Bannister could own, trademark, and grow long-term.

That brand is TopServ Digital.

“TopServ means delivering at a high level and being among the leaders in your industry, especially in the home service space,” says Bannister. “It reflects who we are now, strategic, results-driven, and legacy-minded.”

He worked with a third-party creative agency for the rebrand, a rare move considering his own agency offers design services. But for Bannister, it was a matter of leading by example.

“I tell clients all the time that branding matters,” he says. “So I had to walk the walk.”

The new identity, complete with a stylised checkmark logo and bold messaging, is now the cornerstone (ironically) of TopServ’s marketing efforts, emphasising brand equity as the ultimate differentiator.

Systems Before Scale

With the rebrand in place and the team aligned, Bannister focused next on scalable systems. His agency’s methodology, Brand Equity Domination (BED), prioritises long-term visibility over short-term tactics.

“We’re not just running PPC or SEO campaigns,” he says. “We’re helping clients dominate their market by becoming the first name that comes to mind when a customer is ready to buy.”

That involves everything from video content production to advanced retargeting strategies, all guided by deep market understanding and performance analytics.

“We reverse-engineer our clients’ goals,” Bannister adds. “Then we build a plan that hits those targets. No fluff, just strategy, execution, and results.”

Leading Through Transparency

For Bannister, rebuilding wasn’t just about structure or systems; it was about identity. He had to decide what kind of leader he wanted to be moving forward.

“My wife once told me I was the worst employee ever,” he laughs. “And she was right. I questioned everything. But what I’ve learned is that the same mindset makes me a better business owner. I don’t settle for what doesn’t make sense.”

Now, he encourages his team to challenge assumptions, think critically, and lean into their strengths, while holding themselves accountable to shared goals.

“I’m compassionate, but I’m direct,” Bannister says. “I’ve worked jobs where I didn’t feel heard or respected. I don’t want anyone on my team to feel that way. But I also won’t tolerate complacency.”

A Foundation for the Future

Today, TopServ Digital stands on a foundation of intention. It’s not just a company that grew; it’s a company that was rebuilt to grow better. And for Jonathan Bannister, that matters more than explosive scaling or hollow wins.

“I’m not building this just to make money,” he says. “I’m building something that reflects who I am, that my team can be proud of, and that will last.”

It’s a powerful reminder that sometimes, the best way to move forward is to go back to the drawing board, with clearer eyes, stronger values, and a team that believes in the mission.
