A Local Tradition of Challenging Ideas

Since 2012, TEDxTemecula has been an annual highlight for the local community, drawing hundreds of attendees eager to experience new ideas, innovative thinking, and powerful storytelling. Set for September 27, 2025, at the Old Town Temecula Community Theater, this year’s TEDxTemecula is themed around a simple yet powerful idea: Disruption.

Longtime organizer Jim McLaughlin describes the concept as intentionally broad yet deeply personal. “The idea of disruption is about challenging the status quo,” McLaughlin explains. “It’s about creating meaningful change—not just elevating the past, but bringing something genuinely new to the table.”

The Origins of TEDxTemecula

McLaughlin first brought TEDx to Temecula nearly fourteen years ago after encountering a blog post by renowned author Seth Godin. “Godin wrote something that resonated deeply with me about the potential of TEDx events,” McLaughlin recalls. “It clicked for me: TEDx events are independently organized, created by people within their own communities. I realized we needed something like that here. More importantly, I wanted to live in a community that embraced big ideas.”

Initially, McLaughlin didn’t expect much from his first application. But within a week, TED had given the green light. Suddenly, he was responsible for organizing an event that would soon become a staple of Temecula’s cultural calendar.

Cultivating Community Connection

Over the past decade and a half, TEDxTemecula has developed a loyal following. McLaughlin notes that the event regularly draws a uniquely engaged audience, with city leaders frequently remarking how TEDxTemecula brings out a different crowd than other local events.

“The feedback from city officials and attendees alike shows me we’re offering something special,” McLaughlin says. “It’s more than just a speaker series. It’s become a community gathering centered around curiosity and new ideas.”

McLaughlin himself is visible at each event, interacting with attendees, speakers, and volunteers. He emphasizes that TEDxTemecula has grown beyond simply being a yearly event; it’s become an essential part of the city’s social fabric.

Creating an Intimate Experience

TEDxTemecula’s venue at the Old Town Temecula Community Theater is intentionally intimate, seating around 360 guests. McLaughlin considers this ideal as it allows speakers to truly connect with their audience.

“The intimacy of the venue is key,” he explains. “Speakers have real conversations with the audience. You feel close enough to truly connect with their stories and insights. That’s something bigger venues can’t replicate.”

Preparing Speakers for Impact

A core strength of TEDxTemecula is the coaching and preparation speakers receive. Months before the event, selected speakers participate in regular coaching sessions, honing their messages and presentations with direct feedback. This rigorous process builds not just strong speakers but a community among them.

“Our goal is to help each speaker deliver a talk that genuinely changes people,” McLaughlin emphasizes. “The best moments happen when someone from the audience approaches a speaker and says, ‘Your talk changed my life.’ That’s what we strive for.”

Why “Disruption” Matters Now

Although TEDx events feature a broad range of topics, the 2025 theme of disruption is especially timely. As McLaughlin puts it, disruption challenges people to question their assumptions—whether in business, personal life, or society at large.

“Real change comes from shaking up old patterns,” he says. “We’re encouraging speakers and attendees alike to reflect on how disrupting routines and beliefs can open new possibilities.”

Importantly, McLaughlin makes clear that TEDxTemecula’s themes are always meant as a starting point, not a limitation. The goal is diverse perspectives united by the shared spirit of innovation and change.

A Legacy Continues

McLaughlin had previously planned 2023 to be his final TEDx event. But when word spread about his intention to step down, he received passionate feedback from attendees and community leaders urging him to keep the tradition alive.

“It wasn’t about me—it was about the community,” McLaughlin recalls. “People made clear that TEDxTemecula had become too important to let go.”

Today, McLaughlin remains at the helm but has begun empowering a new generation of local organizers, ensuring the event remains vibrant and responsive to Temecula’s evolving community.

As McLaughlin sums up: “It’s more than talks. It’s about creating moments of genuine transformation and connection that resonate long after the event concludes.”
